Jln Teku Pasai Siong–Kemuyang Road project to improve connectivity in Sibu underway
by Yunus Yussop · Borneo Post OnlineSIBU (Jan 11): Sarawak has taken a significant step forward in strengthening infrastructure development with the groundbreaking ceremony for the Jalan Teku Pasai Siong – Kemuyang Road project here today.
The grand event, held at the Desa Kemuyang Junction near the SMK Jalan Oya football field today was officiated by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR) in a statement said the project is designed to enhance the road network and improve traffic flow in the Sibu area, addressing the increasing mobility needs of residents.
The key components are the construction of a new 6.172km road connecting Jalan Teku Pasai Siong to Kemuyang, upgrading Jalan Teku Pasai Siong to the Universiti Teknologi Sarawak Roundabout to a dual carriageway and upgrading Jalan Persimpangan Taman Desa Kemuyang towards Jalan Sibu-Bintulu to JKR R5 standard.
The proposed construction of a new road from Kemuyang to Teku Pasai will provide an alternative and shorter route for the residents at Kemuyang and Teku Pasai to travel towards Sibu Town, Sibu Hospitals, commercial districts and Sibu Airport.
“Once completed, the project is expected to reduce travel time from Jalan Teku Pasai Siong to Desa Kemuyang from 36 minutes to just 7 minutes, significantly enhancing daily travel efficiency and convenience for local residents,” JKR said.
The Jalan Teku Pasai Siong – Kemuyang Road Project is one of the key initiatives under the 12th Malaysia Plan, demonstrating the state government’s strong commitment to strengthening connectivity networks and stimulating socio-economic development in this area.
With an estimated cost of RM89 million for the first phase, the project is expected to have a significant impact on local residents by providing more efficient infrastructure and better road access.
The project scope for phase 1 include the construction of a new road approximately 6km in length, consisting of a single carriageway built to JKR R3 standard, including a 700m
elevated section, geotechnical works, culvert and drainage system, road furniture and other associated works.
Additionally, the project is anticipated to catalyse the growth of residential and commercial areas in Sibu, thereby enhancing the town’s economic competitiveness and attractiveness.
