Govt considering pause on carbon tax on home heating oil

by · RTE.ie

Taoiseach Micheál Martin has said that the Government is leaning towards a pause on carbon tax on home heating oil for the remainder of its lifetime.

RTÉ News understands that a similar approach is being considered for gas.

Mr Martin, who was speaking at his party's centenary Cairde Fáil dinner, said the primary objective of the Budget is about easing the cost-of-living pressures on families and households.

He promised that there would be a significant childcare package in the Budget. It is one of the issues that still has to be finalised.

Mr Martin stopped short of ruling out energy credits in the Budget.

He would only say that the matter had not been discussed to date and he could not "anticipate what new measures people might put forward at the 11th hour".
