A whopping £458 warning has been issued to Tesco Clubcard and Sainsbury's Nectar card holders. Tesco Clubcard holders could save £401 by switching to Aldi, a new Which? study has found, while Sainsbury's Nectar card holders could save £458.

The Which? analysis includes special offer prices and loyalty prices where applicable, but not multibuys. For the smaller shop, Tesco Clubcard members would have paid £105.61 on average - while without a Clubcard, the Tesco shop cost £108.45.

For those using a Sainsbury’s Nectar card, November’s shopping list of items averaged £106.71, which is £8.82 more than at Aldi. Across 52-week year, that would set shoppers back an eye-watering £458, Which? has also warned.

A shop of 55 items cost £97.89 on average at Aldi last month - this is 45p more compared to £98.34 at rival Lidl, or 38p more for shoppers who are signed up to Lidl Plus, where the typical shop came to £98.27. Waitrose was the most expensive last month, costing £452.09.

Which? told us: "Every month, we compare thousands of prices at eight of the UK's major supermarkets – Aldi, Asda, Lidl, Morrisons, Ocado, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Waitrose – to reveal the cheapest supermarket to buy your food, drink and household essentials from.

"Aldi has been the cheapest supermarket every month this year so far, closely followed by Lidl – but how do big chains such as Tesco and Sainsbury's compare, and does being a member of a loyalty scheme make a significant difference to the overall cost of a basket of groceries?"

"track the prices of up to 200 branded and own-label products every day over the course of a month to work out the average cost per item. We then add up those averages to get a total for each retailer. We include special offers and, since June 2024, loyalty prices where applicable, but not multibuys," it adds.
