Tesco shoppers who own a Clubcard issued unwelcome £587 warning
by James Rodger, https://www.facebook.com/jamesrodgerjournalist · Birmingham LiveTesco shoppers who own a Clubcard have been warned they are spending £587 more than Aldi shoppers. Tesco shoppers can reduce the cost of their supermarket shops by switching from the UK's largest grocer to German discounter and retail favourite Aldi.
Aldi was the cheapest for the 56 items, coming in at £100.29, while Waitrose was the most dear, coming in at £129.83, about 30% more expensive than Aldi for an equivalent basket of goods. Tesco shoppers with a Clubcard would have paid £111 for the same goods in December, Which found.
Over the course of 52 weekly shops if the same price gap was maintained, Tesco shoppers would be paying £572 more than Aldi customers. Tesco shoppers who are not signed up to the loyalty card scheme are even worse off, with a £587 difference.

After Aldi, fellow discounter Lidl was hot on its heels, at £1.19 more if you have its Lidl Plus loyalty app (£101.48), or £1.27 if not (£101.56). Which? also compared the average cost of a larger selection of 158 items – the original 56 plus 102 more. "We were unable to include Aldi and Lidl in this price comparison as our bigger shop has a wider selection of branded items, which were unavailable at the discounters," the consumer watchdog said.
Tesco with a Clubcard was the cheapest, with the total cost averaging £410.40. Sainsbury's with a Nectar card was the second-cheapest at £412.14. Waitrose was the priciest supermarket again (£458.12) - Which? shopping cost 12% more than at Tesco with a Clubcard.
The group explained: "Every month, we compare thousands of prices at eight of the UK's major supermarkets – Aldi, Asda, Lidl, Morrisons, Ocado, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Waitrose – to reveal the cheapest supermarket to buy your food, drink and household essentials from."
