Tesco, Sainsbury's, Morrisons, Asda shoppers warned they could lose £713 each

Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury's and Morrisons shoppers risk losing over £700 each by the end of 2025. Those who opt to shop with the traditional Big Four retailers - Asda, Morrisons, Tesco and Sainsbury's - rather than budget favourites like Aldi and Lidl risk being left hundreds out of pocket.

Shoppers at four top supermarkets face higher weekly shopping costs than at German supermarket Aldi, which Which? has found to be the cheapest in the country, as well as Lidl.

On average, Tesco shoppers pay £10.98 per basket on average, Which? says, while Asda pay £12.93, Morrisons fork out £13.72 more and Sainsbury's shoppers pay £11.84 more per basket. It means, over a year, Morrisons shoppers would pay £713.44 more than Aldi customers.

It comes as Aldi is giving away a whopping £20,000 worth of vouchers, equivalent to four years’ worth of grocery shopping, as new research reveals it to be the cheapest supermarket for the fourth consecutive year.

In its annual price comparison research, Which? found Aldi to be on average £131.13 cheaper per month than Waitrose throughout 2024. Having also won the accolade in 2023, 2022, and 2021, as well as being named the UK’s Cheapest Supermarket every month in 2024, the supermarket is offering one lucky shopper the chance to win its big giveaway.

Harry Rose, editor of Which? magazine, said: “Our research shows Aldi has retained its crown as the UK’s cheapest supermarket in 2024. After the added expense of the festive period, many households will be looking to cut costs. Our analysis shows that by switching supermarkets, shoppers can make significant savings, highlighting the advantages of shopping around where possible.”

Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of Buying at Aldi, said: “This recognition continues Aldi’s remarkable track record of delivering savings to our customers and we’re delighted to have consistently offered top-quality products at the lowest prices across the country.

“With shoppers expected to spend £5,000 on average a year on their grocery shopping, our huge giveaway gives one lucky winner the chance to save on their Aldi shop for up to four years!”
