Sint Maarten airport's only runway closed after hard landing by plane from Canada
A plane from Toronto, Canada, made a hard landing at Princess Juliana International Airport on Sint Maarten on Sunday, damaging the airport’s only runway. The runway will be closed until at least noon on Monday, local time. No one got hurt, the airline, WestJet, reported.
The WestJet Boeing 737-800 landed hard on its right landing gear and then collapsed, according to RTL Nieuws. The plane slid across the runway, with the right engine leaving a scrape behind.
The airline reported that everyone on board was unharmed, but the aircraft was severely damaged.
The runway will remain closed until at least noon, local time. That is 6:00 p.m. Incoming flights are being diverted to other airports in the region. Departing flights are canceled or delayed.
