Poundland to axe six stores across UK including Derbyshire site - full list of closures

by · Derbyshire Live

A major British high street brand has confirmed that six of its stores will close across the UK - including one in Derbyshire. Founded in Burton in 1990, Poundland has grown to become one of the most popular shopping destination for Brits, operating around 800 stores at its peak.

But now, following its acquisition by Gordon Brothers in June, the company is looking to reduce the number of shops to between 650 and 700 stores. In Derbyshire, the Poundland in Church Street, Ripley, is set to close later this month.

The store opened after former Poundland owner, Pepco, rebranded dozens of Wilko stores in October 2023, following the retail giant's collapse a few weeks prior. The Amber Valley store is one of six that will close on Sunday, September 28, and joins locations in Uttoxeter, Shropshire and Kent.

A spokesperson for Poundland said: "Poundland today confirms the location of a further six stores that will close under its restructuring and recovery plan designed to return the business to growth. Colleagues at these locations earmarked for closure under the recovery plan were informed of their store’s status in June and Poundland has now shared a specific closing date for their locations."

The restructuring plan was approved on August 26 and will "provide the platform" for Poundland to implement its recovery plans. These plans include reducing prices and "returning to simple £1, £2 and £3 pricing in grocery aisles and reducing the roster of stores down to around 650-700.

Poundland also added that 10 more stores are yet to be confirmed for closure under the plan. It comes after the discount chain was purchased for £1 this summer by Gordon Brothers, which used to own Laura Ashley.

Poundland is also expected to close its distribution centre at Darton, South Yorkshire, and its national distribution centre at Bilston in the West Midlands in early 2026, reports the Express.
