Sophie Turner performs her own stunts on the set of Tomb Raider
by REBECCA LAWRENCE, DEPUTY SHOWBUSINESS EDITOR (DIGITAL FEATURES) · Mail OnlineSophie Turner gave filming for the Tomb Raider series her all on Thursday as she performed her own stunts in the pouring rain.
The actress, 29, is the latest to take on the role of Lara Croft following Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander, and threw herself into action as filming began in Surrey.
Sophie was seen soaring over a lake on a parachute before running through the woods and grabbing an umbrella to shelter from the elements between takes.
She swapped Lara's signature hotpants for grey cargo pants in the scene, pairing the garment with a ribbed brown shirt and a navy gilet.
The mother-of-two scraped her freshly-dyed brunette locks into Lara's trademark plait and finished off her ensemble with fingerless gloves and holsters for her prop guns.
It's hardly surprising that Sophie is doing her own stunts, having previously revealed she'd been in a training for a year for the role.
Speaking to ScreenRant, she said: 'I can't say much, but my preparation began in February [2025].
'I've been training for a long time now, coming up on a year, and we're going to start shooting in January.
'I'm really excited, but I feel prepped, and I feel really lucky to have such a great relationship with Amazon, and I'm excited for the world to see what we do with Lara and Tomb Raider. I think it's going to be something special.'
She joins the likes of Sigourney Weaver and Jason Isaacs in the video game adaptation.
It hasn't been easy for the cast, with Sophie revealing she suffered a recurring back problem during the gruelling training process .
Appearing on The Julia Cunningham Show, Sophie said: 'We've been doing eight hours a day, five days a week since February last year, of training. Yeah, so it's been a lot.
'I've learned I have a perpetual back problem, but I also realised that it's much easier to kind of build muscle if you've ever worked out before in your life, which I never had, so it has taken me months and months and months to get into good shape.'
Sophie is best known for starring as Sansa Stark in the HBO series Game Of Thrones, but she insisted her years on the show didn't help prepare her for Tomb Raider because she was never involved in any action scenes.
'No, I was the cool queen who, like, didn't have to do that. I also just kind of was the one that got beat up, not the one doing the beating,' she said.
'So, it's quite nice to learn how to throw a punch and not just take it.'
Fleabag star Phoebe Waller-Bridge is behind the new project, serving as creator, writer and executive producer.
She announced the news of Sophie's casting in September, saying: 'I'm so excited to announce the formidable Sophie Turner as our Lara alongside this phenomenal creative team.
'It's not very often you get to make a show of this scale with a character you grew up loving.
'Everyone on board is wildly passionate about Lara and are all as outrageous, brave, and hilarious as she is. Get your artifacts out, Croft is coming.'
Inspired by the beloved video game franchise, the series will follow the daring adventures of archaeologist and explorer Lara Croft.
Sophie, who received an Emmy nomination for her breakout role as Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones, recently fronted the ITV drama Joan and the thriller film Trust, and will next appear in the British series The Dreadful.
