Prince Harry and Meghan reveal new Netflix movie project

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are involved in a new Netflix film production, four months after they signed their new first-look deal with the streaming giant.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were today revealed to be producing an adaptation of romance novel The Wedding Date by bestselling author Jasmine Guillory.

The book was published in 2018 and became the first in a six-book series. It is being adapted by screenwriter Tracy Oliver who was behind the 2017 movie Girls Trip.

Harry and Meghan are working on the project for their Archewell Productions arm alongside film producer Tracy Ryerson, who also worked on 2023 movie The Senior.

A blurb for the Wedding Date book says: 'A groomsman and his last-minute guest are about to discover if a fake date can go the distance in a fun and flirty debut novel.

'Agreeing to go to a wedding with a guy she gets stuck with in an elevator is something Alexa Monroe wouldn't normally do. But there's something about Drew Nichols that's too hard to resist.'

The announcement by Deadline comes after the Sussexes signed their new watered-down, first-look deal with the streaming giant in August.

And just a fortnight ago on December 3, the Duchess's Christmas special of her lifestyle show - With Love, Meghan: Holiday Celebration - premiered on Netflix.

Meghan shared the UK's 'sweet' tradition of pulling crackers with a celebrity restauranteur and revealed she puts a love letter inside the one she makes for Harry.

But reviews were brutal with one advising viewers 'to take as many anti-emetics as medically advisable, then assume the crash position' prior to pressing play.

The Duke and Duchess secured a lucrative contract with Netflix, thought to be worth more than $100million in 2020, after their exit from being senior working royals.

Harry and Meghan then announced this August that they had signed a new 'multi-year, first-look deal for film and television projects' with the streaming platform.

Meghan described the deal at the time as 'an incredible sign of the strength of our partnership', despite rumours the network may be pivoting away from her and Harry.

The couple have produced several documentaries since 2020, with their 2022 series Harry & Meghan still Netflix's most-watched documentary debut to date.

In addition to two series and the Christmas special of With Love, Meghan, the Sussexes were also behind Live to Lead in 2022, Heart of Invictus in 2023, Polo in 2024 and Masaka Kids, A Rhythm Within in 2025.

In August, there was said to be 'active development' on other projects with Netflix, which 'span a variety of content genres', including a feature adaptation of the bestselling romantic novel by Carley Fortune, Meet Me At The Lake.

But the Sussexes' most successful series has been Harry & Meghan – their controversial tell-all 2022 documentary about stepping back from royal duties and their struggles with the royal family.

It totalled 23.4 million views and is Netflix's fifth most popular documentary series of all time.

Meghan has also worked with Netflix as a partner on her As Ever brand, which sells flower sprinkles, pre-prepared baking kits and jam.

The couple's other major media deal with Spotify ended in 2023 after one season of Meghan's podcast Archetypes, with one of the streaming giant's executives later branding them 'grifters'.
