BRIT Awards 2025: Charli xcx is awarded the Songwriter Of The Year

by · Mail Online

With just days to go until the 2025 BRIT Awards, it has been announced that Charli xcx will receive the coveted Songwriter Of The Year prize.

After receiving a record a record number of nominations, the hitmaker will be in attendance at Saturday's ceremony in London's O2 Arena.

Charli leads this year's BRITs with five nominations, including Artist of the Year, Mastercard Album of the Year, Song of the Year with Mastercard, Dance Act, and Pop Act.

This prestigious prize, introduced in 2022, celebrates exceptional songwriting talent and was decided upon by a select panel of expert judges.

Previous winners are Raye, Ed Sheeran and Kid Harpoon.

Damian Christian, Managing Director and President of Promotions at Atlantic Records (part of Warner Music UK) and Chair of the BRIT Committee for 2025 said: 'Charli has had an undeniable year, taking her experimental brand of electronic and pop from underground raves to the heart of mainstream culture.

'Charli's songwriting is distinctive, bold and relentlessly innovative, and, having been one of the UK's leading songwriters for a number of years now, has taken her craft to new heights with her global phenomenon Brat.

'I'm delighted she has been recognised for this much deserved award.'

Charli released her sixth studio album BRAT last June, earning the title of the most critically acclaimed album of the year and topping the UK Official Album Chart in October.

The album was also nominated for the 2024 Mercury Prize, while Guess featuring Billie Eilish debuted at Number 1 on the UK Official Singles Chart, making Charli the first British artist to top the charts last year.

It comes after it was announced that Charli will no longer be performing at the ceremony despite months of negotiations.

According to a close source, the decision comes as she shifted her focus toward preparing for the Grammy Awards, which took place earlier this month.

A music insider told The Sun at the time: 'Charli's team had been in negotiations with the Brits for months and she was set to perform on the night. But she's decided it didn't feel right and she doesn't want the added pressure.

'She has planned a major performance at the Grammys and the thought of doing the same again at the Brits felt like it was too much.

'When it comes to the Brits, she still intends to go, but she wants to be able to let her hair down and celebrate without the pressure of getting up to sing — particularly as she won't be able to party after the Grammys.'

However, there will be live performances from JADE, Lola Young, Myles Smith, and Sabrina Carpenter.

Along with Charli and A. G. Cook, The BRITs have revealed the winners of two more awards in advance of this year’s show.

Announced last year, the winner of this year’s BRITs Rising Star award is Myles and as confirmed earlier this month, Sabrina will be presented with the BRITs Global Success award on the night.

The BRITs will take place live from The O2 arena, and broadcast exclusively on ITV1, STV, ITVX and STV Player.

Harriet Rose and Munya Chawawa will present The BRITs 2025: The Warm-Up on ITV2 and ITVX on Thursday 27th February from 9pm.

It was revealed last month that Roman Kemp wouldn't be hosting the 2025 ceremony despite viewers hailing him a huge success last year.

Jack Whitehall will host the star-studded ceremony

Instead, comedian Jack Whitehall, who previously hosted the ceremony four times, will return as host for the first time since 2021 after a break due to his busy schedule.

BRIT Awards 2025 red carpet hosts are REVEALED

In a clip announcing his return, Jack was seen workshopping puns on his name for the big reveal as well as pretending to call an array of celebrity chums.

Roman showed there was no love lost over the gig as he expressed support for Jack's return by commenting: 'Return of the King.'

Speaking to The Sun, a source said: 'Jack is such a brilliant Brits host and isn't afraid to take the p**s out of some of the world's biggest stars.

'He has such a hectic diary that he's been unable to take part for the past few years but he was available this time and said yes immediately.

'It is one of his favourite gigs as he can have some real fun with the celebs.'

Friends of the star say that he will not return for this year's ceremony which is due to take place on Saturday March 1 at London's O2 Arena after stepping in at the last minute for the 2024 show.

Roman was previously called as a stand in to replace Idris Elba, 52, who pulled out at short notice.

'Roman has been told he isn't hosting this year,' said a BRITs insider. 'He loved it but accepts that these things change.

'He was flattered to be chosen to do it last year but he's a pro and gets it.'
