Ryan Reynolds avoids all mention of wife Blake Lively after insult

Ryan Reynolds kept tight-lipped about wife Blake Lively at his latest public speaking engagement on Wednesday  - two weeks after he insulted her onstage.

The Deadpool star, 48, landed in hot water on September 25 when he shared with a live audience his frustration over trying to get Bill Murray to be part of his upcoming John Candy: I Like Me documentary, which he is a producer on.

After leaving '40 messages,' he had finally gotten a call back from the Hollywood icon, but the timing was inconvenient as he was about to enter a fancy gala with his actress wife, 38 - leading him to swear at her.

He revealed during his John Candy tour in New Jersey: 'I'm there with my wife and we're about to walk in and my phone buzzes, and I look at it. It says Bill Murray and I go, "Bill Murray!"

Lowering his voice as if he was re-enacting whispering to Lively, he continued, 'She goes, "We have to go in!"

'I'm like, "F**k you!" he shared, spilling the derogatory insult he said to his wife.

The actor dropped a bombshell during his last appearance on September 25, in which he revealed he had shouted at his wife, 'F**k you!' as he tried to speak to Bill Murray - Lively pictured with Reynolds in April

It is unclear which gala the Canadian actor was referring to and around what date the exchange took place.

At Wednesday's event at the Kings Theatre in Brooklyn, New York, a sheepish Reynolds told an edited version of the story, in which he left out any mention of 'my wife.'

Sharing how difficult it was to get a hold of the Ghostbusters star, he told the audience, 'I got a number. I called. Voicemail came on. It was a Greek shipping company, naturally. And I left a message and then I did that about 20 more times and eventually he called me back.'

Reynolds skipped over the segment of the story which included Murray calling him when he was with Lively, adding the actor 'ghosted the s**t out of me,' and how he then 'got desperate' so he sent him a 'desperate hostage video' of him and his kids.

'It's like 11:30 at night. My kids showed up. They woke up and my daughter's behind me and I'm in the middle of it. I'm like, "Don't you do it." I'm leaving a message for Bill. She'll just choke you out; she's five.

'And then my son shows up too, he's two... I go, "Tell Bill to do the d**n interview."'

Ultimately, it was his kids who won over the actor after Ryan pleaded, 'I don't know what kind of monster you have to be to say no to a child like that.'

On September 25, Ryan shared with an audience in New Jersey, 'I'm there with my wife and we're about to walk in and my phone buzzes, and I look at it. It says Bill Murray... '[Blake] goes, "We have to go in!" 'I'm like, "F**k you!"

He added, 'And then one second later I get a text... "What do you need from me? Where can I be to help you with JC?"'

The couple, who celebrated their 13th wedding anniversary on September 9, share four kids together: James, 10, Inez, eight, Betty, five, and Olin, two.

Apart from Bill, the documentary features interviews with other stars who knew the late actor John Candy - who died in 1994 from a heart attack - including Martin Short, Steve Martin, Macaulay Culkin, Tom Hanks, Andrea Martin, Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara and Conan O'Brien.

Rather than bringing up any mention of his wife, he welcomed his best friend, Hugh Jackman, on stage as the pair were joined by director Colin Hanks, John's son Chris Candy, and moderator Daniel Pasternack.

'It is called "An Evening with..." myself, several other talented, incredible human beings who pop in and out, and friends.

'And I'm very proud and very lucky and actually honored to be able to call this person a friend of mine for 17, maybe 18 years. His name is Hugh Michael Jackman,' he said.

The Wolverine star walked out on stage wearing a band-aid on his face, next to his left eyebrow, sparking concern from the audience.

Hugh joked about his pal giving him the injury, telling the crowd: 'He's so nice, but smacked me in the head as a welcome.'

This prompted Ryan to respond: 'You start tap dancing and you get near my trumpet, you're going to get (makes noise) clocked in the head.'

Like his character superhero Deadpool, Ryan is known for having a funny side and making jokes - something even Hugh said compared to John Candy.

He, along with Blake, have made playful digs at each other in past interviews.

The Gossip Girl alum once joked that she was 'married to her best friend… and also her fifth child,' while Ryan has said that she 'runs the show at home.'

However, when Ryan revealed the 'f**k you' comment he told Blake, fans did not seem to take a liking to it and he received some backlash.

One fan commented, 'My husband would never tell me f*ck you, we do not speak that way to each other. [I don't care] who calls you,' while another said, 'Ugh. Cancel him already!'

Someone else shared, 'Keep talking, Ryan. The more you say, the less the public likes you and your awful wife.'

'He used to be so funny..now he's just obnoxious,' another added.

Blake is in the midst of a legal battle with her It Ends With Us co-star Justin Baldoni

The couple is in the midst of explosive legal proceedings.

Lively sued her It Ends With Us co-star and director Justin Baldoni for sexual harassment in December 2024 and accused him and his production company, Wayfarer Studios, of orchestrating a smear campaign against her. She also claimed she experienced 'severe emotional distress'.

Baldoni and Wayfarer Studios denied her allegations. He shortly after sued her for defamation and extortion, but the $400 million lawsuit was dismissed in June 2025.

In May, Lively voluntarily agreed to withdraw her infliction of emotional distress claims, according to her attorney.

A few days later, lawyers for Baldoni and Wayfarer filed a motion to compel Lively to provide her medical and mental health care records, to prove she experienced distress, according to court filings. His lawyers also asked for the emotional distress claims to be dismissed with prejudice so they could not be refiled.

However, the judge ruled that Lively does not have to provide her medical records to the court following the withdrawal of the claims of emotional distress.

Reynolds, although not named as a plaintiff in the lawsuit, has been supporting Lively throughout the ongoing federal case, which is scheduled to go to trial in March 2026.

Reynolds' documentary, John Candy: I Like Me, will be released exclusively on Amazon Prime Video on October 10.
