Diplo posts a selfie with 'exes' Justin Trudeau and Katy Perry

Diplo shared a selfie with which seems to feature him with unlikely new couple Katy Perry and Justin Trudeau - after claiming he has previously dated them both.

The American DJ, 46, originally made the outlandish claim while discussing Perry and Trudeau's relationship during an appearance on the Smart Girl Dumb Questions podcast. 

He followed it up by sharing an old photo of himself placed next to Trudeau, taken at an event some several years earlier when the former politician was serving as Canada's twenty third prime minister, although some people speculated the image had been created by AI.

Inadvertently captured directly behind them, an oblivious Perry - at the time in the early stages of a relationship with Orlando Bloom - is seen with the same cropped blonde hairstyle she favoured as far back as 2017 while walking into frame. 

Captioning the shot, Diplo joked: 'The one that got away.' 

Earlier that day the DJ surprised fans by claiming, albeit in jest, that he had been romantically involved with both Perry and Trudeau in the distant past.

'And now Katy Perry is dating Justin,' he said. 'Pretty fire.' 

'I know so many people who like kind of... ' Smart Girl Dumb Questions host Nayeema Raza began before the DJ interjected.

'Dated Katy Perry, like me?' he quipped, adding: 'I did.'

'I did date Trudeau too. That was a weird one though,' he added, explaining how he found it odd as he's 'not into politicians.'

The podcast later clarified that Diplo was joking about dating Trudeau, but the DJ was indeed linked to Perry, in 2014.  

The pair were spotted out in New York City, but E! News sources were conflicted about the status of their relationship at the time.   

One said they were merely 'good friends', but another claimed they were actually more than just that.

'They get on really well,' a source told the site. 'He's just a fun guy and he makes her happy.

'They met when they started talking about doing music together, but there was an obvious chemistry there.' 

The revelation comes after Perry confirmed her romance with the former Canadian Prime Minister during her show in Prague on Thursday.

The singer was surprised to find a fan holding a sign asking to marry her yet again, and explained she's no longer available. 

'This guy is trying to get me to marry him and he has a ring in his hand,' she told the crowd in a video shared to TikTok by a fan.

'No! I am dating someone else for crying out f*****g loud,' the star, who is currently amidst her global Lifetimes Tour, exclaimed.

Perry and the politician first sparked romance rumors after they were seen dining at the Montreal restaurant Le Violon back in July.

They recently went public with their budding relationship as they celebrated Perry's 41st birthday in Paris.  

Perry is newly-single following the end of her long-term relationship with Orlando Bloom.

The former couple, who share five-year-old daughter Daisy together, announced their split earlier this year. 

Trudeau and his ex-wife Sophie Grégoire ended their marriage in 2023; they are parents to daughter Ella-Grace Margaret Trudeau, 16.
