The 79-year-old actor had been battling for his life in the ICU after being diagnosed with acute pneumonia. He was admitted to the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital due to respiratory complications but, despite medical efforts, could not be saved.
His family had issued a statement just a day prior to his passing, on Monday, sharing that he was in a critical condition. The statement read, “The family requests prayers for his speedy recovery and urges everyone to respect their privacy during this difficult time.” His last public appearance was reportedly at the inauguration of the ISKCON temple in Kharghar, Navi Mumbai.
Dheeraj Kumar was a rare sight in public in recent years, but had remained an important figure in the entertainment industry. His funeral is expected to take place on Wednesday in Punjab.
Kumar began his journey in the entertainment world in 1965, becoming one of the finalists in a talent contest alongside future stars like Subhash Ghai and Rajesh Khanna. From 1970 to 1984, he acted in 21 Punjabi films. He also played notable roles in Hindi films such as Beharoopia (1971), Heera Panna (1973), Roti Kapada Aur Makaan (1974), Sargam (1979), and Shreeman Shrimati (1982).
Eventually, he transitioned to television and founded his production company, Creative Eye Limited. As a producer, he created several successful TV shows and was last associated with the 2018 television series Ishq Subhan Allah.
His passing marks the end of an era in Indian entertainment, and he will be remembered for his contributions to both cinema and television.
