Day two of Radio 1's Big Weekend in Sunderland in 37 sun-drenched pictures as 30,000 descend
by Simon Duke, Claire McKie-Reid · ChronicleLiveAnyone who was at Big Weekend on Friday for day one would probably argue that there was no topping that. However, day two definitely gave it a good run for its money and we were there to capture it all.
Friday night got things off to an absolute flyer, with sets from the likes of MK, Sonny Fodera and Clementine Douglas on the main stage proved to be the perfect act for day one headliner Fatboy Slim, who wowed the crowd with a set that included his own smashes like Praise You and Right Here Right Now and a very well received mash up of Born Slippy and Mr Brightside.
There was an earlier start to proceedings on Saturday, with people lined up outside ready for gates to open at 11am and getting down the front in time for Ellie Goulding to give the first big name performance of the afternoon on the main stage, as local acts like Swindled, Heidi Curtis and Tom A.Smith seized the spotlight on the BBC Introducing stage and MUNA were in fine form in the New Music tent.
Later on on the main stage there were great sets from Skye Newman, many people's highlight of the day; Louis Tomlinson who prompted a mass singalong with a solo version of One Direction's Night Changes and Nobody But Thieves, who gave Big Weekend its first and, probably only, mosh pit. Lola Young gave Saturday one of its big moments, with her captive audience singing Messy back to her word for word, as the crowd then geared up for headliner Zara Larsson.
Speaking live on air on the BBC, Radio 1 presenters Jamie Laing and Vick Hope said they'd been told there were around 30,000 people inside the park. And while we didn't manage to get pictures of all of them, we did get a fair few. Check out our best of Big Weekend day two photos below...
