Happy New Year, Newcastle! Fireworks light up the Quayside for Howaymanay displays
by Claire McKie-Reid, Kristy Dawson · ChronicleLiveFamilies watched as fireworks lit up the Newcastle Quayside on New Year's Eve. Crowds of people gathered along the banks of the River Tyne for the first of two fireworks displays this evening to herald the end of 2025 and welcome in 2026 to the city.
They are taking place as part of the New Year's Eve Howaymanay celebration, which has been launched this year. The first fireworks were set off at 6pm and the display was free for anyone to attend.
The second display is due to take place when the clock strikes midnight, the first time a midnight display has taken place in the city since 2019 after previous displays had to be cancelled due to the Covid pandemic or severe weather.
Those who have bought tickets for the later event enjoyed a designated viewing area by the riverfront and were able to access the party village from 8.30pm.
The Howaymanay celebration also featured street performers, live musicians and dancers as well as street food and drink stalls. Vendors included Dipping Donuts, Acropolis, Redheads Mac 'n' Cheese and Lings German Sausage.
