‘Hogwarts Legacy 2’ is officially in the works
After months of speculation, the 'Harry Potter' game sequel has finally been confirmed
by Ali Shutler · NMEA sequel to the hugely popular Hogwarts Legacy has finally been confirmed by Warner Bros. Games.
Hogwarts Legacy was released in 2023 and sold more than 12million copies in its first two weeks. Despite a planned boycott of the game over Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling’s anti-trans views, the title went on to become one of the best-selling video games of all time. Despite the success, a sequel was never officially announced.
It was reported last year that planned DLC for Hogwarts Legacy was scrapped so developers could focus on a “high priority” sequel. However, Netflix’s planned $82.7billion takeover of Warner Bros Discovery left the future of Hogwarts Legacy up in the air after it was revealed the streamer had no immediate plans for the game studio. Netflix ultimately walked away from the deal though, with Paramount Skydance offering more money for Warner Bros Discovery.
In February, Warner Bros’ gaming boss JB Perrette promised that 2027 and 2028 would see the return of their biggest franchises after a “reset” following the disappointing launches of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and MultiVersus.
Last night (August 12) Warner Bros. finally confirmed that Hogwarts Legacy is getting a sequel. “Games remain an important growth lever as we work toward our long-term Studios segment goals,” the company wrote in a letter to shareholders, with Lego Batman: Legacy Of The Dark Knight and mobile title Game of Thrones: Dragonfire both launching this year. “We expect games to more meaningfully contribute to segment profitability going forward as our pipeline expands, including the second installment of Hogwarts Legacy.”
Hogwarts Legacy was set 100 years before the events of the Harry Potter books but a sequel will reportedly tie into HBO’s upcoming adaptation of the series, with the games team “coordinating some of the big-picture storytelling elements in the sequel with the storylines that will play out in the HBO series.” HBO’s Harry Potter series is set to premiere on December 25.
