The Super Mario Galaxy Movie could have a big influence on upcoming games, according to Nintendo's game director Shigeru Miyamoto.

In a recent interview with Nintendo Dream Web, Miyamoto told fans that Princess Peach's backstory may be expanded upon in future games, using The Super Mario Galaxy Movie as a reference point.

Miyamoto said, "Because we don’t know what kind of game we’ll make next with our characters, having too many character settings would become a constraint. I’m fine with being bound by the gameplay, but I don’t want to be bound by having created a story, which has been the reason for not making movies for many years.

"So, before making this movie, I hadn’t decided on the character’s backstory, but now that I’m making the movie, it’s become fun to expand on the character in various ways. Therefore, I would like to adhere as much as possible to the settings created in the movie in future games.”

In The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, we learn that Princess Peach is the sister of galactic traveller Rosalina, and that both of them were born from stardust. At a young age, the two sisters were separated when Peach was sent to live in the Mushroom Kingdom for her own safety.

This was a huge reveal for fans of the game, and it does seem like this will be firmly rooted in the character's canon going forward.
