Award-winning British actress Joan Plowright has died at the age of 95.

Her family said in a statement on Friday that she died the previous day in the presence of her loved ones at Denville Hall, a retirement home for artists in southern England. She was conferred the title of Dame by Queen Elizabeth II in 2004.
Family's statement
The family said in its statement, 'She had a long and illustrious career in theatre, film and TV spanning seven decades, but had to retire due to blindness. We are very proud of all the work Joan did and she was a loving and extremely inclusive person.'

Joan Plowright was part of a generation of British actors that includes Judi Dench, Vanessa Redgrave, Eileen Atkins and Maggie Smith. Joan Plowright won a Tony Award and nominations for an Oscar and an Emmy. She was conferred the title of Dame by Queen Elizabeth II in 2004.

From the 1950s to the 1980s, Joan Plowright performed dozens of stage roles, everywhere from Chekhov's "The Seagull" to Shakespeare's "The Merchant of Venice." She also stunned Eugene Ionesco's "The Chairs" and George Bernard Shaw's two main female roles, "Major Barbara" and "Saint Joan." Plowright appeared in plays by John Osborne, Shelagh Delaney and Arnold Wesker.
