Liam Payne reportedly suffered a devastating blow to his career just days before his tragic and untimely death.

The 31-year-old singer was dropped by his record label, Universal Music, last week, days before his fatal fall from the balcony of his hotel room in Buenos Aires, the Daily Mail reports.

“Liam’s advance was massive and he didn’t recoup [it],” the insider claimed. “Out of all of the One Direction boys, Liam was on the wrong path musically.”

Liam’s solo career failed to reach the same heights as his bandmates Harry Styles, Zayn Malik and Niall Horan and his second album had been put on hold by the label prior to being dropped.

Liam was originally signed to Sony as part of One Direction, however in 2016 when he launched his solo career at 22 years old, he signed a lucrative deal with Capitol Records, a label owned by Universal.

Universal posted on Instagram that they were “devastated by the tragic passing”, adding: “His legacy will live on through his music and the countless fans he inspired and who adored him”.

The statement added: “We send our deepest condolences to Liam’s family and loved ones.”

Liam’s career further unravelled earlier this month when his PR agent resigned, leaving him without publicity representation, the paper reports.

Initial autopsy results for Liam Payne revealed that the singer passed away due to "multiple traumas" resulting in "internal and external bleeding".

According to preliminary findings, the results are consistent with injuries sustained from a ten-metre fall, reports the Mirror.

Further toxicological and anatomical-pathological analysis of Payne's blood and urine is underway to determine if any substances were present. Additionally, investigators may request the singer's medical history to assess his mental health background.
