Not me staying up all night reading about the new Game of Thrones spinoff... here's everything we know about A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms 👀
by Karlton Jahmal · BuzzFeedWelcome back to Westeros! A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, yet another Game of Thrones spin-off, will premiere this weekend on HBO.
The series will bring the story of Dunk and Egg to your TV screens. Although Game of Thrones fans will be familiar with the family names that dominate this story, there are all-new characters to acquaint themselves with.
Here's everything we know about A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms so far:
1. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is based on a series of novellas by George R.R. Martin.
The novellas chronicle the story of a knight named Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire, Prince Aegon V Targaryen, warmly known as "Egg." There are three books so far: The Hedge Knight (1998), The Sworn Sword (2003), and The Mystery Knight (2010). And yes, we're dealing with yet another Aegon.
2. The series takes place 72 years after House of the Dragon and 100 years before Game of Thrones.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will act as a bridge of sorts between House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones.
3. The official synopsis of the show introduces us to, "a young, naive but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends."
4. Studious Game of Thrones fans will recall that Egg is the Night Watch Maester Aemon's brother.
In Game of Thrones, Maester Aemon reveals himself to be Aemon Targaryen and speaks kindly of his brother "Egg." I'm sure a younger Aemon will appear at some point in the series.
5. Martin claims the series is a faithful adaptation of his books.
"A KNIGHT OF THE SEVEN KINGDOMS is an adaptation of 'The Hedge Knight,' the first of the novellas I wrote about them," Martin wrote on his blog. "It’s as faithful as adaptation as a reasonable man could hope for (and you all know how incredibly reasonable I am on that particular subject)."
6. Martin also warned viewers that this series would have less action than Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon.
"Viewers who are looking for action, and more action, and only action… well, this one may not satisfy you," he said. "There’s a fight scene here, as exciting as anyone could ask for, but there are no dragons this time around, no huge battles, no white walkers… this is a character piece, and its focus is on duty and honor, on chivalry and all it means."
7. The cast is stacked, with Peter Claffey playing Ser Duncan and Dexter Sol Ansell playing Egg. Here is the full cast:
Sam Spruell as Prince Maekar Targaryen
Finn Bennett as Prince Aerion Targaryen
Bertie Carvel as Prince Baelor Targaryen
Henry Ashton as Daeron Targaryen
Daniel Ings as Ser Lyonel Baratheon
Steve Wall as Lord Leo Tyrell
Tanzyn Crawford as Tanselle
Edward Ashley as Ser Steffon Fossoway
Shaun Thomas as Raymun Fossoway
Danny Webb as Ser Arlan of Pennytree
Daniel Monks as Ser Manfred Dondarrion
Ross Anderson as Ser Humfrey Hardyng
Tom Vaughan-Lawlor as Plummer
Youseff Kerkour as Steely Pate
8. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will premiere on HBO and HBO Max on Jan. 18, 2026, and is a six-part series.
The first episode will debut at 10 p.m. EST. Here is the remaining release schedule for the series:
Episode 2 — Jan. 25
Episode 3 — Feb. 1
Episode 4 — Feb. 8
Episode 5 — Feb. 15
Episode 6 — Feb. 22
9. Two trailers have been released for the series so far. The teaser trailer introduces us to Ser Duncan, who is burying his mentor and seeking to make a name for himself, and Egg, a curious young boy eager to become a squire.
10. The second, and final trailer, gives fans a little more to digest. It appears Ser Duncan has gotten off on the wrong foot with the Targaryens and must duel for his life. The tone of the show also seems a bit more lighthearted than the grim backdrop of previous Westeros-themed shows, although I'm sure it will have its share of gore and heartbreak.
11. This will be the first Game of Thrones series without any dragons.
As you may have noticed in the trailer, there are no real dragons in sight. We do get a glimpse of what appears to be a fake dragon being used for entertainment, but the series takes place after all the dragons have died due to the fallout from the Targaryen Civil War in House of the Dragon.
12. HBO head of drama Francesca Orsi says A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms was much cheaper to produce than other Game of Thrones shows.
"We’re doing a Game of Thrones spinoff titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms for under $10 million in episode, [which is peanuts] relative to what Game of Thrones or House of the Dragon cost episodically," she stated. "And the battle sequences that the directors achieved match those across Game of Thrones and are a fraction of the price, so it’s a lesson for us that we need to be challenging these budgets." I'm sure a lack of CGI dragons helped keep that budget in check.
