Amanda Seyfried and Thomas Sadoski are going their separate ways after nine years of marriage, but the former couple says their family bond will remain. The actors confirmed their separation in a joint statement to PEOPLE, revealing that they have been apart "for a while" and believe the decision is ultimately the right one for their family.

The couple shared, "We have been separated for a while, and it's proven to be the right move for us and our family unit. We've got each other forever—and it's GOOD."

The news comes after years of keeping their relationship and children largely away from the Hollywood spotlight. Seyfried, 40, and Sadoski, 50, share two children, daughter Nina and son Thomas Jr., and built a quiet family life on a farm in upstate New York.

The pair first met in 2015 while working together on the off-Broadway play The Way We Get By. During that time, they were involved with their respective partners: Amanda was in a relationship with Justin Long, and Thomas was married to Kimberly Hope. They were married for eight years and got divorced in 2015.

Despite their clashing timeline and eventual romance, Seyfried later revealed that Sadoski never crossed a line during their first meeting. In a 2018 interview with PorterEdit, she recalled, "We were both in bad relationships…[Thomas] never flirted, never disrespected his wife. That was another reason why I thought, later on, that I could marry him."

They reunited later that year for the film The Last Word, where they played each other's on-screen love interests. By March 2016, they were an official couple, with PEOPLE confirming that they were dating. From then on, it was a fast-moving relationship. That same year, Sadoski proposed to the actress, with reports confirming their engagement in September 2016.

Rather than opting for a grand wedding, the couple quietly eloped in March 2017. Later, during an appearance on The Late Late Show with James Corden, Sadoski shared details of their intimate wedding. Speaking about their decision to elope and marry, he said: "We just took off into the country with an officiant and, just the two of us, and we did our thing."

The couple was hiding yet another big piece of news at the time: Seyfried was pregnant with their first child when they decided to elope. Just days after their wedding, Seyfried and Sadoski welcomed their daughter, Nina. They later expanded their family with the arrival of their son, Thomas Jr., in September 2020. Speaking about eloping at nine months pregnant and marrying, Amanda told PorterEdit:

"I really wanted to have rings on in the hospital, you know? And what if something goes wrong, and he's not legally my husband?"

Despite being renowned in showbiz, the couple has largely prioritized privacy rather than embracing the usual Hollywood lifestyle. They bought a farmhouse in upstate New York and raised their children away from the spotlight.

Who is Thomas Sadoski?

Sadoski is an accomplished actor best known for his work across film, television, and theater. Before marrying Seyfried, he had already built a career on Broadway and off-Broadway, earning a Tony Award nomination for his performance in Other Desert Cities. His major roles include television projects such as The Newsroom, Life in Pieces, The Slap, and American Sports Story. Sadoski has also worked on the big screen, with roles in John Wick: Chapter 2, Wild, and The Last Word, the film where he worked opposite Seyfried. 

Although their marriage remained mostly private, Seyfried occasionally opened up about what it looked like behind the scenes. In January 2026, she spoke to Vogue about balancing an increasingly demanding acting career with motherhood and acknowledged that Sadoski had made sacrifices to support her professional opportunities. In 2023, Seyfried described herself and Sadoski as "yin and yang" when it came to parenting.  

On September 15, 2026, shortly before the split became public, The Housemaid actress shared a playful photo of Sadoski posing with her bearded dragon, Romeo, calling him "#reptiledad." She also shared a cryptic quote about difficult things, though it isn't confirmed that it was connected to her marriage. She wrote on her Instagram Stories:

"There's really not a difficult thing unless you decide it's a difficult thing. Otherwise, it's just the next thing you're figuring out."

Seyfried and Sadoski's joint statement suggests they intend to remain connected as parents and family. After nine years of marriage and two children, they may no longer be on the same page, but they are making it clear that their bond as a family remains unchanged.
