Ali Fazal Reveals He And Richa Chadha Broke Their FDs To Produce The Film, 'Girls Will Be Girls'

Ali Fazal revealed the struggles they had to face to back Shuchi Talati's directorial debut film, 'Girls Will Be Girls'.

Girls Will Be Girls is a film that debuts director, Shuchi Talati, who has not only directed but also written the iconic coming-of-age drama. Released on Amazon Prime Video on December 18, 2024. Pushing Buttons Studios, Blink Digital, Cinema Inutile, Crawling Angel Films, and Dolce Vita Films produce the film. For the unversed, Pushing Button Studios marks the production debut of actors, Ali Fazal and Richa Chadha.

Girls Will Be Girls is an Indo-French coming-of-age drama film which features a boarding school in the foothills of the Himalayas. The film is filled with firsts as it is also the debut of the main leads, Preeti Panigrahi, who plays the role of the teenage protagonist, 'Mira' and Kesav Binoy Kiron, who plays the role of the charming new student, 'Srinivas'. However, what makes the film even more interesting is that, from the core, the film is supporting those who have struggled to make their way into Bollywood and those who are entering the same field. 

In the latest edition of Screen LIVE, Richa Chadha and Ali Fazal sat for a candid chat about their first production film, Girls Will Be Girls. The film has been making waves in the festival circuit and recently made its digital premiere on Amazon Prime Video. During the conversation, Ali shared how ideas should not be affected by the lack of funds, especially when they are in the growing phase. He revealed that they asked for money to produce the films and even broke their Fixed Deposits to produce them. He stated: 

"We are all from a country that is famous for its jugaad, its ability to figure out a way to get things done. Honestly, we asked for money from here and there, and even broke our FDs to fund Girls Will be Girls. But we managed. Now, it is getting a nice release, and many sections of audience are watching it. It is possible."

Richa Chadha pointed out the importance of collaborations

Richa Chadha shares about the importance of collaboration in bringing these ideas to the screen. She revealed that the film, Girls Will Be Girls, was edited in France. She also added that the film received a grant because of its unique and fresh idea. She shared:

"For instance, this film was edited in France. It received a grant because of the core idea of the film."

In the same conversation, Ali Fazal shared his vision for his production house. He shared that his production house, Pushing Buttons Studios, is open to collaboration and that he would welcome ideas with open arms. He shared that he hopes to bring more films like Girls Will Be Girls to the audience. He was quoted as:

"Our place is open for collaborations, and would love to listen to a lot of ideas. We hope we can produce more films like these, and make it reach a wider audience."
