'Captain Jean-Luc Picard' is dead. Patrick Stewart, the legendary actor who played the iconic character in Star Trek: The Next Generation, has died at the age of 86, leaving behind a remarkable cinematic legacy. His representatives issued a statement Thursday saying Stewart died Oct. 28, 2026. He was cared for by his wife, singer-songwriter Sunny Ozell, after a fight with Alzheimer's disease and Lewy body dementia.
Off-screen, Patrick Stewart's life involved three marriages, two children, and a search for lasting companionship. As the world mourns the celebrated actor, here's a look at his three marriages and what we know about his ex-wives.
Patrick Stewart's first marriage was his longest
Stewart married his first wife, Sheila Falconer, an actress and dancer, in 1966, and their courtship lasted 24 years. Falconer is a British actress best known for her roles in Lady Jane, Hugh and I, and Half a Sixpence. During the marriage, the couple welcomed two children, son Daniel, born in 1967, and daughter Sophie, born in 1972.
As Stewart's acting career took off, his marriage to Falconer began to fall apart and eventually ended in a painful divorce. When the actor landed his career-defining role as 'Captain Picard' in the Star Trek franchise, he spent significant time working in Los Angeles while Falconer remained in London.
The couple divorced in 1990. Looking back on the separation in his 2023 memoir, Making It So, Stewart acknowledged his part in the painful split. The actor told USA TODAY, "My first divorce was harrowing. And I was to blame for it being harrowing."
Since the divorce, Falconer has largely kept a private life away from the spotlight, and there is limited public information about her whereabouts today. She never participated in press coverage, but she reportedly remained primarily in the UK, where she raised Daniel and Sophie.
Patrick Stewart's short-lived marriage with second wife Wendy Neuss
While the X-Men star shared only a five-year age gap with Falconer, he fell in love with a 14-year-younger television producer, Wendy Neuss, whom he married in 2000. Neuss had professional connections to the Star Trek franchise, having worked as a producer on projects associated with the franchise.
Unlike his first marriage, Stewart's union with Neuss was relatively brief. The couple divorced in 2003, after approximately three years of marriage, and Stewart later explicitly admitted to cheating on her with a much younger English actress, Lisa Dillon, while co-starring in a sexually charged London stage production of Henrik Ibsen's The Master Builder.
Neuss is best known for her work in television production and her professional association with Stewart's Star Trek projects. She also co-produced television movies like The Lion in Winter and A Christmas Carol with Stewart's former company Flying Freehold Productions.
Following their divorce, she maintained a relatively low public profile. She chose to settle in Brooklyn, New York, and focuses a significant amount of her personal time on charity work. She never remarried and reportedly focused on working on patient care initiatives with the American Cancer Society and St. Jude Children's Hospital.
Patrick Stewart's third wife, Sunny Ozell, was 38 years younger
Out of Stewart's three marriages, his third and final marriage has grabbed significant attention for his nearly four-decade age gap with Sunny Ozell. The actor met Ozell in 2008 at a restaurant in Brooklyn, New York, where she was working as a waitress. At the time, he was performing in a production of Macbeth. Their first conversation began when Ozell approached his table and offered dessert.
During their conversation, she mentioned that she had wanted to see his play but had been unable to get a ticket. Stewart offered her his phone number and promised to help her attend the production when it moved to Broadway. Ozell eventually watched the show, and the pair went out for dinner afterward. Their connection grew into a relationship, despite their significant age difference.
When the couple married on September 7, 2013, Stewart was 73, and Ozell was 35. Their 38-year age gap attracted attention, but the couple appeared comfortable with their relationship. In a 2022 interview with PEOPLE, he recalled how their chance meeting led to a relationship he had never expected. The actor shared:
"This lovely woman came over and said, 'Gentleman, on the house, what would you like for desserts?' We got talking, and she told me how much she'd wanted to see Macbeth, but it had been sold out... It was the only time in my life I've given someone my telephone number and said, 'Call me.' We had dinner, and here we are."
Ozell is a singer-songwriter who released the albums Take It with Me in 2015 and Overnight Lows in 2020. The couple celebrated their 13th wedding anniversary shortly before Stewart's death in October 2026. Unlike his previous marriages, his relationship with Ozell remained intact until the end of his life. She was by his side during his final days, according to the statement announcing his death.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Patrick Stewart's family and loved ones.
