Johnny Depp Is at Comic Con Dressed Like Ebenezer Scrooge
by Alejandra Gularte · VULTUREIt’s Christmas in July, and Paramount has Johnny Depp wearing full prosthetics and a heavy coat in the middle of summer. At least it’s only 80 degrees at San Diego Comic Con this year; it beats dressing up as Jack Sparrow in more grueling weather at Disneyland. Hundreds of fans were camped outside the Scrooge and Marley activation at SDCC on Thursday, where Christmas carolers began singing, letting them know something was about to happen. Depp popped out as Ebenezer Scrooge to give the crowd a monologue that was difficult to understand — but most people would expect that Scrooge said something grumpy and anti-Christmas. It’s classic Scrooge. In some clips, he’s seen mumbling “Have you no jobs?” to the crowd, who’ve been waiting for hours for his arrival. Bah humbug to subtitles!
Depp is playing Ebenezer Scrooge in the upcoming Ti West movie, Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol, his first mainstream Hollywood role in years after his controversial trial with ex-wife Amber Heard. He promoted the first footage of the movie at Cinema Con earlier this year. “It really has been an extraordinary privilege,” Depp said at the time, per Variety. “I have been obsessed with since I was a little child.” The film stars Rupert Grint, Andrea Riseborough, Sam Claflin, Daisy Ridley, Tramell Tillman, and Ian McKellen and comes out on November 13.
