Robert Eggers’s Next Tragedy Is Romeo and Juliet

What’s scarier than teenage love? Practically nothing, and Robert Eggers is up for the challenge that is teens from feuding families. THR reports that Eggers is close to finalizing a deal with Focus Features for his sixth feature film based on Shakespeare’s tragedy. Focus Features won the rights to the film in a bidding war against A24, Sony, and Warner Bros. No producers have been announced for the project just yet. It’s unclear where R&J falls in Eggers’s priorities, as he previously announced he would be creating a sequel to Labyrinth and an adaptation of A Christmas Carol. It’s also fair to assume the new adaptation could be set in the time period of the original play, the late 1500s, as Eggers hasn’t made any contemporary-style films. He says the most “modern” movie he would ever make would be set in the 1950s, and it doesn’t seem like he plans to write the Capulets and Montagues in an era of the invention of TV dinners.
