Lady Gaga Had a Psychotic Break After A Star Is Born
by Jason P. Frank · VULTURELady Gaga revealed just how bad her “Disease” got during the late 2010s. The singer was “on lithium” while filming the 2018 movie A Star Is Born, she told Rolling Stone in her November 13 cover story. Then, during the Joanne World Tour, which immediately followed production of that film, she says she had a psychotic break. “There was one day that my sister said to me, ‘I don’t see my sister anymore,’” Gaga said. “And I canceled the tour.” In September 2017, Gaga postponed multiple performances in Europe and later canceled the last ten stops of the tour after being hospitalized, citing pain due to fibromyalgia. She didn’t go into much detail then, but she did say, “As I get stronger and when I feel ready, I will tell my story in more depth, and plan to take this on strongly so I can not only raise awareness, but expand research for others who suffer as I do, so I can help make a difference.”
Now, she’s ready to share what happened. “There was one day I went to the hospital for psychiatric care,” she told RS. “I needed to take a break. I couldn’t do anything … I completely crashed. It was really scary.” Gaga added that she wasn’t sure if she would ever be back to her current self. “There was a time where I didn’t think I could get better,” she said. “I feel really lucky to be alive. I know that might sound dramatic, but we know how this can go.” With her fiancé Michael Polansky by her side, Gaga feels better than ever, calling herself a “healthy, whole person.” Ironically, even though she’s currently on the Mayhem Tour, the chaos has subsided.
