Practical Magic 2 Unseats Spider-Man at Top of the Box Office

Spidey and magic just don’t mix. For the first time in six weeks, there’s a new number 1 movie at the box office. Practical Magic 2 came in at $30 million, the legasequel underperforming (according to Variety) despite being top dog. Critics despised the film, but audiences don’t always care what critics think. So there’s still time to see how the Owens sisters fare in theaters. Margarita sales at concessions are probably up, at the very least.

Despite being dethroned, it’s still a big weekend for Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Box office prognosticators foresee the film becoming the highest domestic grossing movie of all time by Monday. Brand New Day currently stands at $935 million in North America, which means that in a few hours it will outperform Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ record of $936 million. Amy Pascal has that much money in her couch cushions.

The Odyssey also reached a new record this weekend. It has become Universal’s highest-grossing movie ever, beating Jurassic World. Nolan’s epic has taken in $1.68 billion thus far and is still going, slaying World’s $1.677 like so many innocent Trojan civilians in Agamemnon’s quest for trade route supremacy. That got sad at the end. Our bad.
