Gavin and Stacey finale viewers all saying the same thing about ending of Christmas night episode
by Darragh Murphy · Irish MirrorFor the last time, the words 'Written by Ruth Jones and James Corden' appearing over Stephen Frenwell's vocals of "tell me tomorrow, I'll wait by the window for you" greeted viewers on the BBC.
Gavin and Stacey viewers tuned in in their droves to watch the last ever episode of the iconic British sitcom on Christmas night, as the curtain came down on the series after 17 years.
Fans of the show were enthralled for 90 minutes as they found out how their favourite storylines played out, including the 'will they? won't they?' mystery surrounding Smithy and Nessa, played by creators and stars James Corden and Ruth Jones.

While there was some frustration among viewers about the lack of closure on the infamous fishing trip story involving Uncle Bryn (Rob Brydon) and Jason (Robert Wilfort), the response was overwhelmingly positive as the various loose ends were tied up for good.
There was shock at the opening of the episode, which followed Nessa's proposal that closed out the 2019 Christmas special, as viewers learned that Smithy was due to marry girlfriend Sonia (Laura Aikman) instead.
But as the festive episode played out and familiar faces popped up, with several references to storylines and characters gone by, it built up to an incredible ending that has been branded "perfect" by many who watched on Christmas evening.
From Pete and Dawn's divorce and reunion to Gwen's unexpected relationship with Dave Coaches, there was no shortage of twists and turns before the finale culminated in Smithy relying on the advice of his closest friends to call off his wedding with Sonia and finally marrying Nessa.
"The ending of Gavin and Stacey was quite possibly the best one and a half minutes of TV I've watched in a long time," one viewer wrote.
Another penned: "The perfect ending. Stories tied off perfectly. Characters where they should be. Plenty of humour. Overflowing with heart. And a handful of iconic lines and scenes."
"Absolutely excellent finale - tied up the loose ends nicely and I'm quite alright with not knowing what happened on the fishing trip!" a third added, while yet another commented: "What a finale! Absolutely amazing final episode. I laughed, I cried. I started watching them when I was 19, I'm now 36! They couldn't have ended it any other way."
The finale attracted an average audience of 12.3 million viewers, the largest Christmas Day audience in over a decade.
