Tommy Fury gives real reason for split with Molly-Mae, admitting to drinking problem
by Zoe Delaney · Irish MirrorReality TV star Tommy Fury has finally revealed the reason his engagement to Molly-Mae Hague ended and claims it had nothing to do with infidelity. In a new interview, the former Love Island star blames his dependency on alcohol after sustaining a boxing injury for the split last year and denies he ever cheated on the mother of his daughter - slamming the rumours and online speculation as 'complete and utter b***ocks.'
Tommy and Molly-Mae met in the Love Island villa in 2019 and went on to welcome daughter Bambi Fury into the world in January 2023. Boxer Tommy popped the question a few months later but in August last year, fans were stunned when Molly-Mae announced the end of their engagement.
However, the pair were spotted sharing a kiss at a star-studded New Year's Eve party and it looks like a reunion is on the cards - just in time for the premiere of Molly-Mae's new Amazon Prime series. Amid speculation the split was a publicity stunt, Tommy has opened up about why he and Molly-Mae ended things last year.
"The reason why me and Molly broke up was because I got addicted to alcohol and I couldn’t be the partner that I wanted to be anymore," Tommy tells Men's Health Magazine. "It kills me to say it, [but] it’s true, I couldn’t. I loved a pint of beer, loved to drink, and it is what it is. People go through different things in life and we all have our crosses to bear. I’ve got mine to bear."

Tommy then explains to the publication how his issues with booze began after he snapped the ligaments in his hand in 2019, which eventually led to reconstructive surgery at the start of last year. He admits his "mental health was in the pan" after the operation and he felt a part of his identity was removed when he could no longer box or train.
"I’ve only lived for training and my family, and that was all snatched away from me. So what I did for fun is I started to drink quite a lot. I found that's what made me feel better," the dad-of-one recalls. "I wanted the endorphins that I’d get when I’d finish a good session, when I’d finish sparring, when I’d finish fighting."
He goes on to admit that his relationship with Molly-Mae began to suffer thanks to his "black-out drunk" drinking sessions - which saw him party with controversial American singer Chris Brown in August - but despite going to a dark place, he never cheated on Molly-Mae and maintained his close relationship with their young daughter.
"Cheating was never a thing. You can ask Molly this yourself. It was the drink, and the drink is not a good thing. You need to get a grip of it," Tommy says. "If you're in the same spot as me, where you just think that it's going to cure all your problems, it doesn’t. You wake up even worse and you want to drink more to try and feel happy again. That's the cycle of it."
Meanwhile, Molly-Mae, 25, has dropped hints that recent events in her relationship with Tommy, 25, have been filmed for her forthcoming documentary. The Love Island star was seen sharing a New Year's Eve kiss with her former fiancé, and confirmed in a recent YouTube vlog that cameras are still capturing the "realness" of her life for Molly-Mae: Behind It All. She even suggested that the Amazon filming crew had rushed to her home to record following a "crisis."
In her vlog, Molly-Mae revealed: "The documentary is six episodes, and the first three drop on the 17th of this month with Amazon Prime. And then we're currently in the process of filming the secondary lot of three which will drop a couple of months later. So yeah, still filming. I had a nice break, I actually filmed for the first time again - was it last night or the night before? When a little bit of a - not a crisis broke out, but, you know, another day in the office."
The reality TV personality cryptically added: "It's very light with the filming, it's very reactive and real-time, and if cameras need to come around at 10 o'clock at night to film some realness, then that's what we've got to do! " While Molly-Mae has hinted that her reunion with Tommy might be featured in the documentary, and that it's all "real," some fans were irate after learning about their NYE smooch.
The timing of the couple's reunion sparked controversy among fans, with some alleging that they never truly separated and that it was all a publicity stunt. On Twitter (X), one fan expressed: "Well she fooled everyone. Funny how they are back together now his book is out, her clothing brand and now documentary is done. Played everyone like a fool all for more money."
Another user concurred: "Using the 'breakup' as PR for Maebe, Tommy's book and documentary. But snogging Tommy on NYE? Convenient! ! ! " "IT WAS ALL A PR STUNT. Well played; So the breakup WAS fake? ? " fumed a third, while a fourth alleged: "They didn't even really split, money money money."
However, insiders insist that Molly-Mae and Tommy's reunion was authentic, with Molly-Mae harbouring hopes of it paving the way for a permanent future together. An exclusive source told the Mirror: "She's never stopped loving Tommy. Everyone in Molly's circle were convinced that they had split for good and they are wary of her getting back with him because of how much he hurt her. Molly insists they're taking things slowly and still get on because of Bambi, but the truth is she has never stopped loving him and it is still her dream to marry him and have more kids."
Insiders have revealed that Molly-Mae Hague is keeping her head when it comes to rekindling romance, stating: "She's not stupid and she would only let Tommy back into her life in a romantic way if she felt she could fully trust him - and he still has a long way to go to build up that trust again. But he has said he'll do anything to win her back and will happily follow her rules in a bid to win her back and move home."
