Kaantha Movie Review, Rating and Release Live Updates: Dulquer Salmaan’s much-awaited period drama Kaantha has finally hit screens. The first reviews of the film describe it as a riveting gender-bender, with the performances of Dulquer and Bhagyashree Borse earning widespread praise.

Kaantha, also starring Samuthirakani and Rana Daggubati in pivotal roles, is rumored to be a fictional retelling of an unknown chapter in the life of MK Thyagaraja Bhagavathar, the first superstar of Tamil cinema.

However, at a recent press conference, Rana, who has co-produced Kaantha along with Dulquer Salmaan, dismissed rumours of the film being a biopic. Rana said, “Kantha is a completely fictional story set in the 1950s, inspired by the artistic rivalries and creative struggles of that era. It’s about the dark and passionate side of brilliance.”

Dulquer added, “Such experiences are rare. The film recreates a time when art, music, and literature defined perfection. Cinema like this celebrates our roots.”

The writer & director were so keen to manipulate the audience with many genre shifts within the story. Excellent DOP, mediocre editing, & great set work. Despite reports linking it to the life of M. K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar, the film is fictional, a creation that borrows perhaps a detail or two but otherwise invents its own disaster. You keep waiting for the film to twist harder, but it mostly delivers what you’ve already suspected."

Trade analyst and writer Sreedhar Pillai shared his Kaantha Review and called the Dulquer Salmaan and Rana Daggubati-starrer, "Brilliant". His review read, "A captivating, drama-driven narrative from director Selvamani Selvaraj powered by ego, ambition & betrayal that play out along with powerful performances from its lead actors. A period drama set in 1950’s Madras tinsel town ( there is a shot of LIC building on Mount Road under construction) , when big studios ruled. First half is the deadly ego clash between a veteran director Ayya (Samuthirakani) taking on the superstar KT Mahadevan (DQ) ‘Nadippin Chakravarthy’ whom he discovered & mentored. Second half is pure Hitchcockian style murder mystery- who pulled the trigger? The way director has seamlessly blended both the parts together is what keeps you hooked till the end. What a solid performance by Dulquer Salmaan, his best till date, you can see the emotions of the character he plays in the breakdown ‘mirror scene’. And Samuthirakani as the ego driven maniac is perfect foil to DQ. Bhagyashri Borse is riveting and does a neat job as the girl torn between her loyalty to Ayya and her love for KTM. For Rana it is a cakewalk as comical investigation officer. Antony’s editing and Jakes Bejoy bgm enhance the production. Yes it has pacing issues but is definitely one of the best films of the year, and is sure to sweep the awards."
