We haven’t fully conquered our own continent – Kojo Antwi on African music

by · MyNewsGh.com

Kojo Antwi used his Joy Prime interview monitored by MyNewsGh to critique the global labeling of African music. “Africa is too big,” he said.

“What comes out from Egypt, Morocco, our part, even Sagal, you shouldn’t do the same thing everywhere. Our music is too large to identify as one beat.”

He praised the commercialization of Afrobeat while cautioning against overgeneralization.

“It’s good that it’s commercialized now, but we’ve given it just one name and that’s wrong,” he added. Antwi stressed that African music has diverse influences and regional uniqueness that must be preserved.

The music legend also encouraged artists to focus on African audiences.

“We haven’t conquered places in Africa,” he said. “If we decide to use what we have in Africa, all of us should prosper—not just financially, but in influence and impact.”

Antwi’s remarks extend beyond artistry to cultural advocacy, urging musicians to leverage their platform for unity and progress.

“Music must be taken seriously. We need to be internationally out there, but also make sure we impact our own communities,” he concluded.
