TikTok’s Virality Race Is Eroding Content Standards – Ameyaw Debrah
by Stephen Zoure · MyNewsGh.comCelebrity blogger and journalist Ameyaw Debrah has raised concerns about what he calls a growing disregard for content standards on TikTok, warning that the pursuit of virality is pushing creators to produce increasingly questionable material.
Speaking in an interview with Kafui Dei, Ameyaw said creators can now do almost anything, attract significant attention, and potentially monetise it, raising concerns about the kind of content being normalised in society.
“It’s like you can do anything and get attention and even monetise that, and so it becomes worrying,” he said.
He said the pressure to go viral has changed the motivation behind content creation, with some creators prioritising attention and views over meaningful material.
“Now going viral is the target for every creator, so they are doing anything to get attention,” he stated.
Ameyaw said this trend could have wider consequences for society because social media is increasingly normalising behaviours and standards previously considered unacceptable.
He recalled that when he and other early digital content creators began their journey, the objective was not simply to attract views but to produce meaningful content.
“We wanted people to create meaningful content, not just for likes and views,” he said.
He identified TikTok as particularly concerning because of the freedom and ease with which people can produce, distribute, and monetise content.
“TikTok is the number one guilty platform. There is too much rubbish going on over there,” he said.
However, he acknowledged that the platform also hosts valuable content and expressed hope that the system would eventually improve.
