Screaming Jets frontman Dave Gleeson will appear as part of the NRL's pre-game entertainment at Sunday's grand final.

Rumours were swirling on Friday that the Screaming Jets would play at the grand final in Sydney, however, the Newcastle Herald understands that while Gleeson will perform, he is unlikely to be joined by the full band.

It follows a tumult of uncertainty about the entertainment after scathing comments about the NRL's treatment of artists by singer Amy Shark surfaced hours after she was reported to be in the line-up.

In April last year, during the AFL's Gather Round, Shark slammed the NRL with criticism it underpaid artists and performers.

The Queensland singer, who had performed during 2020 grand final, has been tipped to return on Sunday as part of a supergroup including Gleeson, and members of Grinspoon, Peking Duk, and Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers, in a pre-match tribute to Rabbitohs player Jai Arrow, who was diagnosed with motor neuron disease earlier this year.

Media outlets reported on Friday that the all-star ensemble would donate their performance fees to support research and treatment of the disease.

The Herald has contacted the NRL for comment.

Earlier this week, NRL boss Peter V'landys, said a cast of "very special Australian performers" would play as Arrow, whose diagnosis forced his early retirement, will walk the field.

Confirmation of Gleeson's appearance came Friday after Newcastle favourite Silverchair responded to an impassioned campaign by Andrew Johns to stage a grand final reunion.

Silverchair members Daniel Johns, Ben Gillies and Chris Joannou released a joint statement addressing public pleas for the band to get back together to make Sunday's big dance the "greatest grand final".

The statement said that for the first time in ages, the three former band members "actually agree wholeheartedly about something: GO KNIGHTS!!!".

"It's all about the Knights this weekend. We love how footy brings this community together, and it's pretty special watching the whole Steel City get behind the boys."

Gleeson and the NRL have been approached for comment.
