‘My Father’s Shadow’ wins ‘outstanding debut’ as Mosaku shines at 2026 BAFTAs

‘My Father’s Shadow’ has been named the best ‘Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer’ at the 79th British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA).

The film was produced and directed by Nigerian-British filmmaker Akinola Davies Jr and was set during the tumultuous 1993 Nigerian presidential election, which was annulled by the military junta.

Davies said the story was conceived alongside Wale, his elder brother and the other half of the legendary Nigerian music duo Show Dem Camp, as a homage to their father, who died when they were young.

‘My Father’s Shadow’ is a critically acclaimed film that premiered at the Cannes Film Festival.

Wunmi Mosaku, the Nigerian-British actress, also won the ‘Supporting Actress’ category at the BAFTAs.

Mosaku clinched the prize for her role as Annie in the 2025 film ‘Sinners’.

‘One Battle After Another’, which led the nominations with 14 nods, also became the highest winner of the night with six wins, including ‘Best Film’, ‘Best Supporting Actor’ and ‘Best Director’ categories.
