Netflix's 'Kian's Bizarre B&B' praised for accurately labeling Dokdo in other language captions
by Sophie-Ha · allkpopThe Netflix variety show 'Kian's Bizarre B&B' has been gaining much popularity for its witty and fresh concept, combined with the hilarious chemistry of the cast. Recently, the show has garnered praise for accurately labeling the Korean territory of Dokdo in other language subtitles.
'Kian's Bizarre B&B' is a unique guesthouse reality show in which webtoon artist and entertainer Kian84 opens a guesthouse on Ulleungdo and welcomes guests with BTS’s Jin and Ji Ye Eun.
In Episode 6, released on April 15, a father visits the guesthouse with his two sons and embarks on a trip to Dokdo. The broadcast showed scenic views of Dokdo, with “독도” (Dokdo in Hangul) prominently displayed in the sky. When subtitles are switched to English, the caption reads “DOKDO.”
If the viewer sets the subtitles to Japanese, it displays as “独島(ドクト)” with “ドクト” (Dokuto) being the phonetic rendering of “Dokdo” in katakana. This follows the correct official Korean name for the territory.
In the past, several global streaming platforms stirred controversy by incorrectly labeling Dokdo as “Takeshima,” but 'Kian's Bizarre B&B' is being praised for labeling the island as 'Dokdo' in various languages.
Netizens who watched the show responded positively, saying, “Netflix officially recognized Dokdo,” “Patriotic subtitles,” “Dokdo according to Netflix,” “Even the subtitles are perfect,” “Dokdo, officially acknowledged by Netflix,” “As expected of Netflix,” and “With BTS’s Jin on the show, ARMYs all over the world will see it. It’s so satisfying to see ‘DOKDO’ written clearly.”
Meanwhile, 'Kian's Bizarre B&B' shot to No. 1 on Netflix Korea’s Top 10 Series chart right after its release. It also entered the Top 10 in 18 countries, including Singapore, Brazil, and Japan, reflecting its rising global popularity.
The series has been highly anticipated from the start, as it is the latest work from PD Jung Hyo Min and writer Yoon Shin Hye, the duo behind JTBC’s 'Hyori’s Bed and Breakfast' (Seasons 1 and 2), which aired from 2017 to 2019.
At a previous press conference, producing director Jung commented, “Viewers seem to enjoy the freshness of the guesthouse concept and the sense of secondhand discomfort. It left a strong impression. From Episode 4, the business really kicks off, and you can look forward to the explosive chemistry among the staff and the synergy and stories of the guests.”
Episodes 7 through 9 will be released on April 22.
