Netflix's upcoming mystery thriller 'Outback' draws attention with Jung Ho Yeon, Ryu Jun Yeol, and Hong Kyung in star-studded cast

A new Netflix original series is already generating excitement ahead of production thanks to its high-profile cast.

According to an exclusive report by JTBC on July 21, Jung Ho Yeon has been offered a role in Netflix's upcoming series 'Outback.' Earlier, Ryu Jun Yeol and Hong Kyung were also reported to be joining the project.

Jung Ho Yeon's agency, BH Entertainment, confirmed, "It is true that she has received the offer. She is currently reviewing it."

'Outback' is based on the mystery thriller webtoon 'G'day', originally serialized on Lezhin Comics. The story follows Sion, who travels to Australia in search of his missing older sister, and Hans, a mysterious man whose connection to her gradually unfolds. Ryu Jun Yeol has been offered the role of Hans, while Hong Kyung is set to portray Sion.

The series will be produced by Shortcake, the production company behind Netflix's hit 'Weak Hero', and directed by Jeon Doo Kwan, who previously helmed TVING's 'Scene: Strange Stories.'

Jung Ho Yeon recently made her big-screen debut in the film 'Hope,' which premiered on July 15 and surpassed 2 million moviegoers within just five days of its release. She also participated as a global ambassador in the trophy trunk ceremony during the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final.

In director Na Hong Jin's Cannes competition entry 'Hope,' Jung Ho Yeon plays police officer Lim Sung Ae, who confronts extraterrestrial creatures and emerges as one of the film's key action heroes.

Starring alongside acclaimed actors including Hwang Jung Min, Jo In Sung, Michael Fassbender, and Alicia Vikander, Jung Ho Yeon underwent six months of intensive firearms training and performed demanding car chase action scenes, further showcasing her range as an actress.

Her commanding screen presence, highlighted by scenes featuring a grenade launcher, earned praise from both audiences and critics, with many describing her performance as "a bold transformation" and "a rediscovery of Jung Ho Yeon."

Meanwhile, Ryu Jun Yeol—who will star alongside Jung Ho Yeon in 'Outback'—has built an impressive filmography that includes the hit drama 'Reply 1988,' which recorded a peak nationwide viewership rating of 19.6%, as well as films such as 'The Night Owl', the 'Alienoid' series, and Netflix's 'The 8 Show.'

In 'Outback,' Ryu Jun Yeol is expected to deliver another dramatic transformation as Hans, the enigmatic figure at the heart of the story's mystery. Set against the backdrop of the Australian Outback, Hans becomes deeply entangled with Sion as the series gradually uncovers its central secrets.

Known for portraying everything from grounded, realistic characters to layered villains and emotionally complex roles, Ryu Jun Yeol is expected to bring subtle tension and suspense to the mysterious character.

Hong Kyung is also expected to elevate the series with his acclaimed acting skills. He has previously impressed audiences through dramas such as 'Revenant', 'Weak Hero Class 1,' and the film 'Troll Factory.'

In 'Outback,' Hong Kyung takes on the role of Sion, who travels to Australia in search of his missing sister.
