Disney announces live-action film ‘Tangled’ lineup without BLACKPINK’s Lisa

Disney officially unveiled the lead cast for its upcoming live-action adaptation of 'Tangled,' drawing widespread attention. However, one highly anticipated name was missing from the announcement, BLACKPINK's Lisa, who had previously been rumored as a potential lead.

On January 7, The Walt Disney Company revealed the main cast through its official Instagram account. Australian actress Teagan Croft was confirmed to play Rapunzel, the iconic princess known for her long golden hair. American actor Milo Manheim will portray her counterpart, Flynn Rider.

The announcement has sparked discussion due to Disney’s recent casting controversies involving its live-action remakes. In projects such as 'The Little Mermaid' and 'Snow White,' the studio faced criticism for casting actors whose backgrounds differed from the original depictions of white characters. Both films struggled commercially and became focal points in debates surrounding what critics described as excessive political correctness.

Against this backdrop, the casting of 'Tangled' has been largely welcomed by global fans. Online reactions include comments such as “It was worth the wait,” “Disney has finally come to its senses,” and “This casting matches the original image perfectly.” Some fans have also interpreted the response as a sign that Disney may be shifting away from its previous casting direction.

Still, disappointment remains among some fans. In November last year, reports suggested that Lisa was being discussed as a strong candidate for the role of Rapunzel. This fueled widespread speculation online that the BLACKPINK member might take on the role in the live-action remake.

As attention now turns to the film’s production, many are watching to see whether Disney’s live-action 'Tangled,' which aims to preserve the emotional depth and charm of the original, can help restore the studio’s reputation following recent controversies.
