‘Signal 2’ pulled from tvN’s summer lineup amid Cho Jin Woong controversy, ‘Pachinko’ to replace
by Demian09 · allkpoptvN’s highly anticipated anniversary drama ‘Signal 2’ has officially been removed from its planned summer broadcast schedule following controversy surrounding its lead actor, Cho Jin Woong. The network is now expected to fill the vacant slot with Apple TV+’s global hit series ‘Pachinko.’
According to an April 17 report by OSEN, ‘Signal 2,’ originally slated as a flagship project commemorating tvN’s 20th anniversary, will no longer air in June or during the summer season. Instead, ‘Pachinko’ Season 1 is reportedly being considered as a replacement in the programming lineup.
Despite the setback, the drama has not been permanently canceled. Insiders indicate that tvN is taking additional time to carefully reconsider its release strategy. Discussions are ongoing, with the possibility of a broadcast later in the second half of the year or toward the end of 2026 still open. As a project designed to mark the network’s 20th anniversary, there is strong internal motivation to ensure it airs within the year.
A tvN representative responded cautiously, stating, “It is true that ‘Pachinko’ has been confirmed for broadcast on tvN. However, the exact date and time slot have not yet been finalized.”
The network had previously addressed the situation in December, emphasizing its commitment to the series: “‘Signal 2’ has been prepared with great care as a project for viewers who have waited 10 years. We deeply empathize with the disappointment and concern felt by audiences in light of the current situation. While it may take additional time, we will do our utmost to find the best possible solution that preserves the value of the original work and respects our viewers.”
‘Signal 2’ is the long-awaited sequel to the 2016 hit drama ‘Signal,’ which achieved both critical acclaim and massive popularity. The new installment reunited original cast members Kim Hye Soo, Lee Jae Hoon, and Cho Jin Woong, drawing significant attention from the early planning stages. Renowned writer Kim Eun Hee returned to pen the script, and filming has already been completed.
However, the project’s future became uncertain following revelations about Cho Jin Woong’s past. Reports alleged that the actor had committed a serious offense as a minor, resulting in juvenile detention. Additional claims included a past assault case leading to a fine, a history of drunk driving, and speculation that he adopted his father’s stage name to conceal his past.
In response, the actor’s agency acknowledged parts of the allegations, stating, “After confirming with the actor, it is true that he engaged in misconduct during his youth. However, these incidents occurred over 30 years ago, making it difficult to verify the exact details, and all legal matters have already been resolved.” The agency firmly denied any involvement in sexual assault allegations.
Following the controversy, Cho Jin Woong issued a public apology through his agency, announcing his retirement from acting: “I sincerely apologize for disappointing everyone who trusted and supported me due to my past misconduct. I will humbly accept all criticism and, as of today, will cease all activities and bring my acting career to an end. I believe this is the responsibility I must bear for my past actions.”
As the situation continues to unfold, the fate of ‘Signal 2’ remains uncertain, while ‘Pachinko’ is poised to take its place, at least for now.
