Former Lovelyz member Lee Mi Joo sparks debate after sharing photo of grilling pork belly on her apartment balcony

Lee Mi Joo, former Lovelyz member, has unexpectedly stirred controversy after sharing a photo of herself grilling meat on her balcony.

On March 15, Lee Mi Joo posted a photo on her social media with the caption, “Title: On the balcony.” The image shows Lee grilling meat on a small portable grill set up on the balcony. Notably, the grill held just two small slices of pork along with garlic and mushrooms, creating what many described as an “ultra-mini” meal with more vegetables than meat.

Friends and acquaintances reacted playfully in the comments. Jae Yoon of the group STAYC jokingly asked, “Why are you only eating two pieces?” Lee’s older sister also chimed in with humor, commenting, “That won’t even produce any grease.” Other family members left teasing remarks such as, “Two pieces of pork belly?” and “You don’t really need to eat it on the balcony,” to which Lee Mi Joo responded with a playful, “So what?"

Lee Mi Joo reportedly explained that she grilled the meat on the balcony to avoid the smell indoors. However, the post quickly spread across online communities and social media, sparking an unexpected debate.

Some netizens criticized the act, pointing out that in apartment complexes, grilling meat on a balcony can allow smoke and odors to spread to neighboring units above, below, or next door, raising concerns about residential etiquette. Comments included, “You don’t want the smell in your own home, but it’s fine if it goes to your neighbors?” and “Grilling meat on a balcony is as stressful as noise between floors.” Others noted that the smell could cling to neighbors’ laundry or bother residents who have their windows open.

On the other hand, many argued that the criticism was excessive. Some netizens defended Lee, saying, “There are only two pieces of meat. How much smell could that produce?” and “It’s over the top to criticize someone for occasionally eating on their own balcony.” Others added, “It feels like people are policing a celebrity’s everyday life,” and “If someone is that sensitive, they should live in a detached house.”

What began as a simple “food update” photo has since evolved into a broader online discussion about apartment living etiquette, drawing mixed reactions across the internet.

Meanwhile, Lee Mi Joo has remained active in various variety shows since her time with Lovelyz, gaining popularity for her candid personality and lively charm.
