Apple Music Classical now has a web player with spatial audio and lossless hires audio

Apple Music Classical gained a web player to stream classical works in a browser, with a new exclusive recording available for a limited time to celebrate the launch.

The web player at classical.music.apple.com lets you stream anything from the Apple Music Classics catalog, including spatial audio and lossless recordings. You can listen to free 90-second previews as a signed-out user. Signing in with your Apple Music account is required to stream full recordings, access playlists and more

Still, some features of the native app are unsupported, like viewing all works by a composer, all albums of an artist or all recordings of a work.

Apple Music Classical is still unavailable in some countries, like Turkey (Apple’s page lists supported countries). The service is free with an Apple Music subscription.

The web player supports the powerful search feature from the native apps that lets you find recordings by many criteria, including composer, work, conductor and opus number. You can also browse curated playlists (one of the gems of Apple Music Classical) if you’re unsure where to start, composer biographies and editor’s picks.

The Cupertino company celebrated launching the web player by making a new recording of Julius Eastman’s Symphony No. 2, titled “The Faithful Friend: The Lover’s Love for the Beloved,” along with Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 2 (better known as the “Little Russian” symphony) from conductor Franz Welser-Möst and the Cleveland Orchestra exclusively available on the service for the next six weeks.

Apple Music Classical was born from Apple’s 2012 acquisition of Primephonic, a classical music streaming service. Primephonic was shut down, and a reworked service made its debut on iPhone in March 2023, introduced the official Android app in May 2023 and gained an iPad app in November 2023.

Apple Music Classical has the world’s largest classical music catalog, with over five million works ranging from famous masterpieces to lesser-known works. It has native apps for the iPhone, iPad, Android and CarPlay. What remains missing is a Mac version, but Apple has not indicated when it might be released.
