What’s Azaad about

Azaad tells the enchanting tale of Govind (Aaman Devgan), a simple village boy whose heart beats for the legendary stories of valiant princes and their noble steeds. Growing up in the stables where his father works for the zamindars, Govind's love for these majestic creatures blossoms naturally. His world changes forever when he encounters Azaad, a stunning black horse owned by the rebellious Vikram Singh (Ajay Devgn). It's love at first sight for Govind, but earning Azaad's trust is no easy feat. As time passes, an unbreakable bond forms between them, a friendship so profound that they would go to any lengths to protect each other from harm.

What’s Hot

Azaad is helmed by the gifted director Abhishek Kapoor, renowned for his emotionally resonant films like Kai Po Che, Rock On!!, and Kedarnath. Kapoor's storytelling is deeply rooted in the exploration of emotions and the intricate relationships between characters. In Azaad, he shifts his focus to the unique bond between a young boy, Govind, and a majestic horse named Azaad. This heartwarming tale evokes memories of the 1985 classic Teri Meherbaniyan starring Jackie Shroff and Poonam Dhillon, where a dog was imbued with human-like qualities to forge an unbreakable bond. In Azaad, it is the profound connection between the boy and his horse that takes centre stage, promising a story filled with warmth and loyalty.

This isn't just another Ajay Devgn film, though he does play a pivotal role and, as always, excels in intense and action-packed scenes. The sequence where he first discovers Azaad and their ensuing inseparable bond is truly heartwarming. The director, however, allows the newcomers to take the spotlight. Aaman and Rasha exude confidence, making it hard to believe this is their debut. While they have room to grow, their performances are promising. Aaman is charming as the 'stable' boy, and Rasha lights up the screen with her electrifying presence. Both showcase their dancing prowess in the songs Birangay and Uyi Amma. Amit Trivedi's music is memorable, with Ajeeb-O-Gareeb being particularly catchy, evoking the nostalgic vibes of 60s and 70s music. This track will remind you of Sharmila Tagore and Manoj Kumar's Haule Haule Chalo More Saajna from the 1966 film Sawan Ki Ghata.

The film also marks the big screen debut of popular television actor Mohit Malik. Director Abhishek Kapoor revealed that he sought someone with the debonair and aristocratic charm of yesteryear actor Rehman Khan, known for his negative roles, and Mohit fit the bill perfectly. Effortlessly embodying the character, Mohit brings a strong screen presence that leaves us eager to see more of him in future films.

While the film doesn't feature any seeti-maar dialogues, it is peppered with profound and witty statements that add depth and charm. The quirky characters further enhance the film's entertainment value. Azaad isn't an out-of-this-world story; it's familiar and that's precisely its strength. It's a simple, sweet tale that warms your heart with the beautiful bond between a boy and his horse.

What’s Not

Set in the 1920s during pre-independence India, the film Azaad naturally adopts a slower pace. However, the initial minutes of the first half are particularly sluggish. In today's era of second screen viewing, such a slow pace can struggle to maintain audience interest. Additionally, the development of Rasha and Aaman's romantic relationship, as well as the moment when Aaman's character, Govind, begins to idolize Ajay's character, lacks depth and proper exploration.

BL Verdict

Azaad is a charming tale of love and loyalty, with an inspiring message that success comes to those who dare to take the first step. Enjoy this heartwarming story and the sincere performances of rising stars Aaman and Rasha.
