Veteran actor Manoj Kumar was born on July 24, 1937 in Abbottabad which is now in Pakistan. This is the same place where the dangerous terrorist Osama Bin Laden was killed back in 2011.
Manoj Kumar’s birth name was Harikrishna Giri Goswami. It is said that he was a very big fan of Dilip Kumar and therefore changed his name to Manoj Kumar after being inspired by his idol character in the film Shabnam which was released in 1949.
Manoj Kumar was a child when his mother and brother were admitted to a hospital but during partition doctors and nurses fled away. His baby brother passed away while his mother was in a serious condition. Manoj Kumar was only 10 when he was shifted to Delhi along with his family after partition.
Manoj Kumar made his debut in 1957 with the film named Fashion which didn’t bring him any recognition. Earlier, during his struggling days, Manoj worked as a ghostwriter at different studios where he was paid Rs 11 per scene.
Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, following the Indo-Pak war asked actor Manoj Kumar to make a film based on the popular slogan Jai Jawan Jai Kissan. Taking note of the Prime Minister’s demand, Manoj Kumar made his directorial debut with Upkaar.
In 2016, the veteran actor Manoj Kur was honoured with prestigious Dadasaheeb Phalke awards by then President of India Pranab Mukherjee for his excellent contribution in the entertainment industry.
