Now that Final Destination Bloodlines is available via digital Video on Demand platforms, more fans (including us) have discovered its various connections to other films in the franchise.

As it turns out, the Easter Eggs in this movie are as random and convoluted as Death’s famous Rube Goldberg traps. That said, the best Final Destination demises are known for possessing a touch of irony, so the fact that some Bloodlines deaths reference prior deaths is quite appropriate. The extra dimension makes them all the more satisfying. Of course, not every reference in Bloodlines has to do with Death — not directly, at least. As that vending machine spring said to Bobby’s head in the hospital, let’s dig in.

Stefani’s license plate

This Easter Egg may have gone unnoticed forever if not for Reddit. In a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment, Stefani’s plate is RFK 575, which is not, in fact, a reference to the Secretary of Health and how he always sounds like he’s on the brink of death, but to the license plate of Carter in the first Final Destination. Also, something tells me that this RFK 575 plate is very easy to rent in Los Angeles, because it has also apparently appeared in Zoolander and The Wolf of Wall Street.

Two ways to cheat

Warner Bros.

The presence of William Bludworth (Tony Todd) is itself a callback to numerous Final Destination films, but Bludworth also turns out to be the Death Whisperer of Bloodlines. He references both Final Destination 2 and Final Destination 5 when he informs the doomed Reyes-Campbells that if they wish to double-cross Death, they can either take a life or die themselves.

Clear Rivers Hospital

When Darlene is trying to remember hospital names, she frantically tosses out “Clear Rivers Hospital,” incidentally referencing the character Clear Rivers from Final Destination and Final Destination 2. To be fair, Clear Rivers does sound like the name of a hospital or at the very least a retirement home.

Seat belt with a mind of its own

Everyday devices in Final Destination films tend to malfunction, unprompted, at the most inopportune moments. Par for the course, Stefani’s seat belt locks in place in the climax of Bloodlines thanks to a twist of fate, causing her to almost drown. This also happened to Carter in the original Final Destination when his seatbelt became locked and trapped him in the path of an oncoming train.

Train derailment

Speaking of trains, Bloodlines ends explosively and shockingly with a train derailing and speeding through the neighborhood after Stefani and Charlie. This seemingly calls back to Final Destination 3, which also ends in a surprise train derailment that snuffs out several lives.

Kimberly Corman, Survivor

There is canonically a survivor of the Final Destination films! Though the bonus features for Final Destination 2 revealed that Kimberly Corman tragically fell into a wood chipper, Bludworth tells the characters of Bloodlines that she remains alive to this day. Since she technically died for some moments, she managed to break the cycle.

Near-miss with a bus

Warner Bros.

The Accidentally Walking Into Oncoming Traffic trope has been played to death since Terry Chaney got hit by a bus in the first Final Destination movie, but Bloodlines finds a satisfying way to reference it by having Erik just miss getting hit by one. Erik’s multiple run-ins with Death are in fact a recurring joke of the movie.

All of the logs

To add insult to injury, Stefani and Charlie not only fail to escape the runaway train that pursues them through the neighborhood, but wind up flattened by two logs that soar from its cars. It’s brutally funny due to its cruel timing: There’s a moment when you think that the two protagonists actually escaped. Then the logs rain down. It’s even more ironic because Darlene, Stefani, and Charlie were nearly hit by a log truck when they were leaving the hospital earlier in the movie. Additionally, Iris’s not-so-crazy notebook of Death sketches references log trucks in graphic ways. Of course, these are all references to the most iconic death sequence in the whole franchise. In Final Destination 2, a truck carrying a load of logs triggers a vicious sequence of events that, thanks to immortal memes, continues to haunt millennial viewers to this day.
