They met at 17 and 22 on a movie set, felt the spark, then spent 15 years living separate lives before it turned into anything. Now they’re two Oscars, two kids, and 16 years of marriage deep.
Cruz and Bardem are in Venice for “Bunker,” Florian Zeller’s marriage drama that casts them as husband and wife, their first big on-screen pairing in years.
The path here took decades. They met in 1992 on “Jamón Jamón,” her feature debut, and felt the chemistry during a wardrobe test, but nothing came of it. They barely crossed paths again until Woody Allen’s “Vicky Cristina Barcelona,” which they filmed in the summer of 2007, and the film went on to win Cruz the Oscar and make her the first Spanish woman to take home the award.
They started dating quietly around 2007 and 2008, dodging paparazzi on getaways to the Maldives and Brazil. Bardem confirmed it in 2010 at Cannes while accepting an award for “Biutiful,” calling her “my friend, my companion, my love.” That July they married in a family-only ceremony on Johnny Depp’s private island in the Bahamas.
Son Leonardo came in 2011, daughter Luna in 2013. They’ve stayed famously private, rarely talking about work at home and turning down most chances to act together to protect what they have.
Both are Oscar winners, among Spain’s most celebrated exports, and they’ve shared the screen in “The Counselor,” “Loving Pablo,” and “Everybody Knows.” On the marriage, Cruz put it simply: “I feel like I’m still learning. And I am with somebody that I’ve known for 33 years.”
