Paramount Pictures is in talks with Keanu Reeves to headline James Wan’s upcoming action-crime feature, The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil. The project marks a high-profile pairing between the action veteran and the blockbuster director.

The film serves as an American reimagining of the 2019 South Korean thriller, which originally debuted at the Cannes Film Festival. Original lead Don Lee (Ma Dong-seok) is attached to reprise his role opposite Reeves. The premise follows an unconventional alliance between an organized crime boss and a relentless police detective who reluctantly join forces to track down an elusive serial killer.

Marking Wan’s first directorial outing since 2023’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, the production features a heavyweight roster of producers. Wan will produce alongside Michael Clear and Jason Blum through Blumhouse-Atomic Monster, joined by Lee for Big Punch Global, Sylvester Stallone and D. Matt Geller via Balboa Productions, Chris S. Lee of B&C Group, and Lorenzo di Bonaventura. Eric Pearson penned the latest version of the screenplay, following earlier drafts by Shay Hatten and Brian Helgeland, with Helgeland and Billy Acumen serving as executive producers.

Reeves, celebrated for anchoring franchises like The Matrix and John Wick, recently starred in Apple TV’s Outcome directed by Jonah Hill and voiced Duke Caboom in Toy Story 5. The actor is also slated to reprise his role as Shadow in Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog 4, scheduled to hit theaters on March 19, 2027.
