Hulu has officially handed a series order to Ryan Coogler’s reboot of The X-Files. The greenlight follows the filmmaker writing, directing, and executive producing the pilot episode for the streaming platform.

The reimagined sci-fi drama stars Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel, who previously appeared together in Station Eleven. Rather than portraying modern versions of iconic investigators Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, the duo will step into original roles as two decorated, contrasting FBI agents assigned to investigate cases within a long-shuttered division dedicated to unexplained phenomena.

Produced by 20th Television alongside Coogler’s Proximity Media banner, the production features Coogler executive producing alongside showrunner Jennifer Yale, Zinzi Coogler, Sev Ohanian, and original series creator Chris Carter. “I’ve loved The X-Files for a long time, so getting the chance to write and direct the pilot has meant a great deal to me,” Coogler stated. “What Chris Carter created is special, and we wanted to honor everything that made the original series connect with so many people while also finding our own way into that world. Danielle and Himesh, along with the rest of our cast, have brought such original perspectives and performances to these characters.”
