Netflix has unveiled the first trailer for Greta Gerwig’s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew, offering the most expansive look yet at her interpretation of C.S. Lewis’ fantasy world.
Scored to Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven,” the trailer opens with Daniel Craig’s eccentric magician Andrew Ketterley introducing Digory and Polly – played by David McKenna and Beatrice Campbell – to the magical rings that send them beyond their own world. From there, the clip moves through the lush, pond-filled Wood Between the Worlds and into increasingly fantastical territory, introducing Emma leMackey’s imposing Jadis, the future White Witch, as well as mythical creatures including the winged horse Fledge. Its biggest reveal comes with Aslan, voiced by Meryl Streep, whose cosmic silhouette emerges as the lion sings Narnia into existence, framing Gerwig’s film less as another return to the familiar kingdom than an origin story about how it was born.
Based on Lewis’ 1955 novel, The Magician’s Nephew takes place before The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and marks the book’s first screen adaptation, tracing Digory and Polly’s discovery of interconnected worlds and the events that bring both Jadis and Narnia into being. The project also marks Gerwig’s first feature since Barbie, with the filmmaker having long advocated for beginning Netflix’s Chronicles of Narnia adaptations with this particular story after the streamer acquired rights to the seven-book series in 2018.
Alongside McKenna, Campbell, Craig, Mackey and Streep, the ensemble includes Carey Mulligan, Ciarán Hinds, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Denise Gough and Susan Wokoma, while Gerwig’s Barbie collaborator Mark Ronson returns to handle the music. Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew will begin IMAX previews on February 10, 2027, before opening globally in theaters on February 12 and arriving on Netflix on April 2, 2027.
