Anne Hathaway to Star in Film Adaptation of ‘Verity’ by Colleen Hoover

· Rolling Stone

Another film adaptation of a Colleen Hoover bestseller is headed for the big screen and has landed its lead: Anne Hathaway will star in Verity, which will be developed by Amazon MGM Studios.

Both Variety and Deadline confirmed the news on Wednesday. Hathaway will play famed author Verity Crawford, who suffers from a mysterious accident before she can complete her next thriller novel. To finish the manuscript, her husband Jeremy Crawford offers struggling writer Lowen Ashleigh a gig finishing his wife’s series. Soon, however, Ashleigh discovers shocking manuscripts by the titular author and descends into a dark exploration of the Crawfords’ past.

The roles of Jeremy and Lowen have yet to be announced. Producers for the upcoming film include Eat the Cat’s Antosca and Alex Hedlund, Semi-Formal Productions’ Showalter and Jordana Mollick, Somewhere Pictures’ Hathaway, and Heartbones Entertainment’s Hoover and Shiny Penny Stacey Sher. According to Variety, Nick Antosca wrote the script after previous attempts by Hillary Seitz, Angela LaManna, and Will Honley and April Maguire.

Hoover self-published Verity in 2018, and Grand Central Publishing acquired the novel in 2021. The book spent 103 weeks on The New York Times Best Sellers list.

The news of Hathaway’s casting follows the release of another Hoover special earlier this year. It Ends With Us starring Blake Lively rolled out in August. The film, which is about domestic abuse, received harsh criticism for its marketing. Many fans also speculated about behind-the-scenes cast drama between Lively and co-star and director Justin Baldoni.
