Brad Pitt on Why Tom Cruise Backed Out of ‘Ford v Ferrari’
· Rolling StoneFollowing the commercial success of the Brad Pitt-starring F1, Pitt revealed that he and fellow Hollywood star Tom Cruise almost featured in another racing drama.
During an interview with The National, Pitt shared that the pair were slated to feature on Ford v Ferrari, but ran into a major speed bump along the way. “Tom and I, for a while there, were on Ford v Ferrari with Joe [to direct],” said Pitt. “This was about 10 years before the guys who actually made it – and made it a great movie.”
He continued, “What it came down to is that we both wanted to drive, and he wanted to play Shelby, and I wanted to play Ken Miles. And when Tom realized that Carroll Shelby would not be driving much in the movie, it didn’t come through.”
The roles of driver Ken Miles and car designer Carroll Shelby would later go to Christian Bale and Matt Damon, respectively, with James Mangold directing.

It’s been over 30 years since Pitt and Cruise appeared in 1994’s Interview With the Vampire, based on Anne Rice’s best-selling novel, and the idea of the two reuniting on the racetrack has piqued Pitt’s interest. The actor also addressed rumors of a potential sequel.
“I would want to drive again, selfishly speaking,” Pitt said, but given the film’s ending wondered how his character would make sense. “Where does Sonny fit in? I’m not sure. Sonny’s probably out on the Bonneville Salt Flats, setting speed records or something like that. So I’m not sure beyond that, just yet.”
