Claire Danes in ‘The Beast in Me’ Trailer Turns a Johnny Cash Lyric on Its Head

· Rolling Stone

“We are, all of us, drawn to monsters,” declares Claire Danes to start the The Beast in Me teaser, which dropped Monday. “We flirt with death to prove we’re truly alive.”

The creepy 40-second teaser captures Danes as Aggie Wiggs and Matthew Rhys as Nile Jarvis in a montage of eerie mystery scenes, filled with death investigations, blood, and … a peeping Tom? The upcoming show, set to premiere on Nov. 13 on Netflix, will follow Danes as a grieving author who has receded from public life. Her character soon finds a subject in a new neighbor, once a suspect in his wife’s disappearance.

“At once horrified and fascinated by this man, Aggie finds herself compulsively hunting for the truth – chasing his demons while fleeing her own – in a game of cat and mouse that might turn deadly,” reads a synopsis of the series.

The show is being executive-produced by writer and showrunner Howard Gordon of Homeland fame. In an interview with Netflix’s Tudum, Gordon revealed the title of the show was taken from a Johnny Cash song.

“It’s not as simple as it might initially seem. It really is about all of our complicity,” he said in the interview. “Whether it’s Monica Lewinsky or Amanda Knox or Nile Jarvis or whatever, sometimes we are quick to make assumptions. But when we are forced to look at it from another angle, do we have the humility and the compassion to listen and to revise the narrative?”
